Sounds Like: REVIEW FROM musictruth.co.uk
"Columbia Road" kicks off the set, a song reminiscent of 80s cult heroes Violent Femmes, with a kick-in groove which would make Larrakin Love purr!! "Ruby Lee" a paean to a 17 year old "Little Girl in an old man's world" owes something to the Modern Lovers' minimalism, but powered by bassist Dan's busy riffing it sounds like punk rock wanting to crash through as singer Orlando yelps "She's got me where she wants me".Then we take a trip 1970s style to Laurel Canyon for "We Guilty Men Must Grieve" as Dan switches to slide guitar. Here the raw, amateurish sound adds a certain cool to the proceedings. The sweaty feedback of "Rise and Gain" sounds like Mick Jagger pouting his way through Caribou or slanted-era Pavement."Monica Vitti" and "Pirate Broadswipes" wed the geekiness of Jonathan Richman and the tense, jittery hyperactive feel of new wave through a good-ole Southern helping of pancakes and grits. The final song "Don't Get Cute with Me" (I think - although i'm rather drunk by this point) is an ancient Chinese version of patter cake in sub one minute!!In the half hour or so that OATSM are on stage the crowd are woken up to cold showers and shaken to their feet. I can't really pigeon-hole them, nor would i want to, but i'll say this - it would be well worth your while keeping an
eye out for these guys in the future! 19/01/2006: Bethnal Green Pleasure Unit
Orlando and the Showmachine
Jimmy The Fruitarian
from the Brixton Windmill:
ORLANDO & THE SHOW MACHINE(London)
They're from London, they're a four-piece. Those are just about the only two facts you can say with any confidence about Orlando and his Showmachine friends. As unpredictable as they are brilliant, musictruth.co.uk columnist Jimmy The Fruitarian said they were best band he's seen so far this year, so we HAD to get them in. One minute beautiful and melodic, the next haunting and atmospheric, prepare to be enlightened.
