The Irish Latino (EL INESPERADO)

About Me

Explosive, determined, spontaneous, energetic, captivating and talented are all words to be heard when talking about Reggaetons newest phenomenon, Michael Gauna, better known as MikeyG, but did we mention Irish? Yes, you read that correctly. MikeyG is the first Irish male to make his mark on this rapidly growing style of Latin music. When thinking of Reggaeton, one quickly associates this music with the Panamanian and Puerto Rican cultures, but how is it that this Irish man was so easily accepted? Although MikeyG is new to the Reggaeton movement, he is no stranger to the Latin music market.
When MikeyG was just a kid, God not only blessed him with a voice to romance the masses, but God also blessed him with the opportunity to be adopted by a Latin family in which he states is the best thing that had ever happened to him. When MikeyG was growing up, his passion for music was evident when he would stare in amazement as his older brothers played musical instruments and created a sound that was called Cumbia. After hearing this sound day after day, he knew what his calling in life was.
As MikeyG grew, so did his love for music. He was later asked to take a part in his brothers’ band, Los Jalapeños, as the accordion player. During his 17 year career with Los Jalapeños, MikeyG was awarded and nominated for some of the most prestigious awards Latin music had to offer including two Grammy nominations, four TTMA nominations, five “Best Latin Band in Colorado” awards and, one “Tejano Band of The Year” award given by Tejano Magazine. In 2005, Los Jalapeños decided to take a break from the music scene and live life the simple way but MikeyG was not going to give up that easy.
In late 2005, MikeyG decided to take a chance in the Reggaeton market. This was not a very easy step to take as the Reggaeton movement is dominated by a culture of people he was not very familiar with – the Puerto Ricans. Although he feared failure and not being accepted as he experienced in Tejano music, he gave it a shot anyway. After two short years exploring and testing the waters in this genre, he found it was a lot easier then he imagined when the public quickly accepted because of his voice, regardless of the color of his skin. MikeyG recalls his first shot at the mainstream when Super Producer, Myztiko produced his very first song, Entre Tu Y Yo Ft. Noztra. It then became quite clear that MikeyG was on his way to stardom when this song became an instant hit in the Urban and Latin American streets.
After creating a widely spread street buzz, Reggaeton veteran and icon, Master Joe, expressed his faith in MikeyG and took him under his wing and the label El Escuadron Records. MikeyG is now teamed up with El Escuadron Records and ready to continue making his mark. You can expect to hear a lot more from this prodigy so keep your eyes peeled and your ears opened because MikeyG will soon be a household name in the world of Latin music.
