Formed in the early 1990s and hailing from the city of San Diego, California, the group Simple achieved success in the form of radio airplay and a heavy performance schedule in several US cities. The group’s four members, Allen, Scott, Mark and Alain, drew from a wide range of inspiration to create their trademark combination of melodic ballads, and hip hop-influenced dance/club tracks.
Although the group will quickly point out that their only full-length album (self-titled, 1996) never quite captured their essence, those who had the fortune of witnessing one of their live performances could probably tell you that there was an element of “realness†to their music. This “realness†came from each member’s love for and constant exposure to R&B and underground hip hop music.
These days Simple is no longer active as a group, but the Simple legacy lives on. Songs such as “Asian Girl†and “When the Sun Comes Up†grace MP3 players in the most unlikely places and all of the former members are involved in music in one form or another.
