Wes Mingus

About Me

Wes first started playing the guitar in the fourth grade, spending hours playing heavy metal riffs in his Delaware bedroom. By high school, he began commuting an hour away for private lessons. The turning point came soon after, when Wes's music teacher introduced him to jazz, exposing him to a creative landscape that completely transformed his approach to playing music forever. He went on to attend Berklee College of Music, where he studied everything from traditional composition to world music, including African and Indian percussion. The diversity of his studies at Berklee, combined with his complete immersion into a musical atmosphere had a profound impact on the way he plays today. Wes draws influence from such disparate styles as electronica and jazz, hip-hop and folk, to create a distinctly original approach and sound. In Philadelphia, he played live or in the studio with Glenn Lewis, The Roots, Vivian Green, and Leela James to name a few. Currently based in Brooklyn, he is staying busy performing and/or recording with The Revelations featuring Tre Williams, the Wu-Tang Clan, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Bubba Sparxx, Res, and Bilal, among many others. He has also contributed to the Boondocks animated series and the Ultimate Breaks and Beats Instrumentals album series. When he's not recording and performing around the city or around the world, Wes works on his own projects--writing, teaching, producing, and playing music.
