Whiplash is a 3-piece power trio hailing from New Jersey. The band was assembled back in 1984 when Tony Portaro and Tony Scaglione joined forces, recruited Tony Bono on bass and released their first CD, Power and Pain, in 1985 on Roadrunner Records. The debut CD was followed up by their first live performance at RuthieÕs Inn in Berkley, Ca with Possessed and Death Angel. Scaglione left Whiplash for a short tour with Slayer and recommended the heavy hitting Joe Cangelosi. The Brooklyn, NY native secured the position in 1986.
Portaro, Cangelosi and Bono proceeded to record the 2nd CD, Ticket To Mayhem in 1987. They enlisted Glenn Hansen to take over the lead vocal position allowing Portaro the freedom to focus strictly on guitar and released Insult To Injury in 1990.
The crew brought their mix of melody and speed on the road to Canada, Mexico City and the Midwest states. Numerous Tri-state area performances included many shows at CBGBÕs and LÕAmour in Brooklyn, NY. These were highlighted by extensive European tours in 1986, 1988 & 1990.
Cangelosi went on to join German metal band Kreator in 1994 and recorded Cause For Conflict in 1995.
Portaro remained the pillar of the band while the lineup went through many changes over the course of their six full length CDs including Cult Of One, in 1996 and Sit Stand Kneel Prey, in 1997. After handling the guitar work for Billy MilanoÕs M.O.D. on a European tour in early 1998, the original Whiplash lineup returned for a reunion CD entited Thrashback.
Now Whiplash returns to give their fans a long awaited breath of fresh new material. Whiplash stays true to their fans with the power-thrash riffs and double bass that broke them into the industry. With a mix of mid-tempo ballads and driving, blues-based rock hooks, the band manages to show their diversity on a platform bred, born and raised on Groove Street with no regard for the speed limit.
Rich Day takes over bass with the passing of Tony Bono and Cangelosi splits the lead vocals with Portaro. Cangelosi & DayÕs pulsing rhythms combined with PortaroÕs, Berklee College of Music background take you on a journey from the castle to the curb.
Together drummer, Joe Cangelosi, and bassist, Rich Day, form an earthy foundation that firmly supports the vocal lines and becomes the feed on which PortaroÕs guitar leads thrive.
The trio have completed recording their long anticipated CD, Unborn Again which was produced by Harris Johns & Portaro who recently completed his studies with Rick VanBenschoten for Audio Production and Susan Nuziata for Music Marketing at NYU.
