The road to rap stardom is full of detours. Rapper/songwriter and Zero Gravity Records signee JOHN WESELEY seized all the opportunities presented to him since setting off on his road to rap stardom. His roots trace back to Miami, FL (Naranja) were he was born and raised.
"I'm ina bizznes of makin hit records...period!!!," says John who started rapping as early as he can remember. Shortly after high school John joined the Air Force. However, his aspiration to become a full-fledged artist led him to an early exit to pursue his dreams of becoming a super-star.
"The service just wasn't panning out for me, so I got out and was determined to make this rap thang happen," reveals John in his southern twang. A year or two of grinding out in Tampa led John into the Hyde Park Cafe where (producer) DJ Gravity was the house DJ. The two imediately started recording together.
"Gravity's production was perfect for my flow. His tracks were top 40, and I made hood records. Thats a perfect blend, and thats how you get cross over hits that will stand the test of time", says John. When we recorded "BOUT DA PAPER" we knew it was a great record, but Gravity insisted I record a track for the ladies; thats when we came up with the idea for the "Spring Love Re-Make".
Coming up in Miami, besides listening to local staples like 2 Live Crew, Trick Daddy Dollas, JT Money, Jam Pony Express, and Uncle Al, or other Southern icons like Geto Boyz, Outcast, 8-Ball & MJG, and Goodie-Mob, John Weseley consumed a steady diet of both East Coast & West Coast flavored rap music, which in turn influenced his own style. "A lot of people say I'm a great story teller and they feel the passion in my delivery. I must say, I do have a way of painting vivid pictures", explains John.
But there's no denying John's southern roots. "A lot of Southern music is about the beat, and club bangers", says John, before describing his own work. "You're going to hear lyrics, you're going to hear shit that people can relate to, you going to hear passion in my music, you going to hear club bangers. I can't help but do club shit because of where I'm from. I'm from Miami, and our music make a bitch wanna move. Then I moved up to Tampa and they sprinkled me with their vibe. It's a great combination, how can i not take the top spot?!"
