Band Members: Starr Nyce was born and raised in the small town of Lynchburg, Va. Although Lynchburg is mostly known for being home to Liberty University and founder evangelist Jerry Falwell, Starr Nyce still found himself being pulled into the Hip-Hop culture at a very young age. He credits LL Cool J’s “I’m Bad†video for sparking his interest in Hip-Hop. “From the moment I saw that video†he says excitedly “I knew that was what I wanted to doâ€. Performing a cover song of LL’s “I Need Love†at the age of 9 in the school talent show solidified his vision. “I felt like I was already famous†he says laughing “and that feeling that you get on stage is a high that’s hard to shakeâ€.
After being introduced to local rapper Devious Kanevil through a mutual friend, Starr Nyce went on to record his first studio song at age 14. “Yeah Devious really took me under his wings and showed me the ropes as far as taking an idea from my rap book and making it a complete songâ€. “Just being in that circle I met everybody in the city who was respected for rapping and making beatsâ€. “I’m talking bout DJ Noyz, D. Black, D’ Mob, DJ Terrorkane, Divine Prophets all the people who opened doors for artists like meâ€. Being in this circle allowed him to open up for people such as Smif N Wesson, Ill Al Scratch, Da Rascalz, Camp Lo and Drag-on. Although Starr Nyce met many people through being affiliated with Unbroken Cipher, befriending DJ Terrorkane turned out to be a key piece in the progression of his career. “After linkin’ up wit D’ Mob who made all the beats for UnBroken Cipher, I started vibin’ wit DJ Terrorkane when I wanted to experiment with different producersâ€.
This chemistry led to a local classic “Hill City†produced by DJ Terrorkane for the two man group Tha Wondaz of which Starr Nyce was a member, along with Dolla. The year was 1998. “That was the moment when people started to take us serious†he says “The song ended up being placed on a mixtape hosted by my man DJ Flow and everybody was diggin’ it because we where talking about our city and different events that took place there.†The song “Hill City†ended up making it’s way into the hands of Cat, who is the C.E.O. of Cat’s E.ntertainment Y.ou E.nvy. Cat got Starr’s contact information from DJ Terrorkane and called him to set up a meeting. Cat recruited Starr Nyce to be the flagship artist of Cat’s E.Y.E and he immediately began recording countless songs at The Recording Zone, which is owned and operated by Jhon Ackerman.
Fast-forward to 2006, 3 albums(The One/ Bang!/ Astrology) and 3 mixtapes(Strictly Freestyles/ Can I Live?: The Mixtape Magazine/ Soul Survivors) later. Starr Nyce felt he had exhausted all of his outlets in Lynchburg. He had been on dozens of mixtapes, recorded hundreds of songs, performed at as many venues as possible and mailed out Press Kits to every record label he could think of. After taking a trip to Atlanta with some friends for his bachelor party, Starr Nyce became attached to the place now known as the south’s Mecca of Hip-Hop. “Man we hit a couple parties and hit Magic City and I was hooked! It’s just the feel of the city, I like the vibe. I mean, we went to parties where nobody got into a fight all night. I’m from Lynchburg where by the time 1 o’clock rolls around, you better start watching your surroundings ‘cause something is gonna jump off.†Six months later Starr Nyce moved to Atlanta with his wife and all of his belongings. No family, just a couple friends who had also made ATL their new home and his hopes of making it into the already overcrowded music industry.
Starr Nyce has taken full advantage of Atlanta’s many Open Mic Nights & Talent Showcases geared toward up and coming artists. You may have seen him crushing stage shows at events like The Producer’s Swap Meet at The Apache Café or The Best of the Best with Akini of Hot 107.9 at The Royal Peacock. When asked why he left VA for ATL he offered this response, “Basically back home we don’t have a platform to display our talent, I came to Atlanta to be seen and heard by people who can make big things happen for me and my label.â€
Armed with a voice commonly compared to Ghostface, Starr Nyce comes with lyrics flavored by the East Coast but saturated with the swang of the South. “Roof Back†and "Get Off Me"(Prod. by Ryan B.) are Starr Nyce’s latest singles from the upcoming album “A Dollar & a Dreamâ€, which got this title from the mind-state Starr Nyce was in when he moved to Atlanta. He also released a mixtape entitled “Allow Me 2 Reintroduce Myself†in MARCH 2008. “It’s like I’m starting over because I left a buzz back home. So I gotta start from the scratch again, that’s how I came up with the name for the mixtape.†He also linked up with Big Fruit, producer of Cadillac Don & J-Money’s “Peanut Butter & Jelly†& Bobby Valentino's "Beat" for his own smash titled “Supa Juiceâ€. Keep an eye out for this rising “Starrâ€, who is definitely “Nyce†enough to secure a spot in the game.
