About Me
Hello there! My name is Myra, and my sister Kate and I created this 'Space page. The page has been created with the intent to honor the memory of those who served in Vietnam and died years later from Agent Orange related causes. It is also meant to honor those who are still living but dealing daily with the effects of Agent Orange exposure.
For many years now, families have been fighting to get the names of their loved ones included on the Vietnam Memorial Wall, but to no avail. According to everything we have been told, the wall is strictly reserved for the names of service people who died in the Vietnam conflict. The major arguement against that train of thought is this: What about those who served and died years later because of something that happened in Vietnam? If you stop to really think about it, the Vietnam War took their lives too. My sister and I are 100% convinced that the federal government will never erect a Wall for these individuals, nor will they ever allow their names to be added to the existing Wall, because it would ultimately mean admitting what happened over there and admitting that the "best-laid" plans caused much more damage than was ever believed possible.
So, this little haven is meant to honor the people whose names aren't allowed on the Wall, or whose names won't be allowed on when they have slipped the bonds of Earth to touch the face of God. This page is their Wall. This space is to prove that some people haven't forgotten their ultimate sacrifice for their country: their lives after many years of suffering. Anyone who was exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam has a struggle on their hands - some have lost the battle, some are still living and fighting it every day. Names will be added to this page as they are given to us, so please, if you know of someone who has died from Agent Orange related causes, or who is still living and dealing with its after-effects, get the individual's name and state to us so that we can make sure that they have their rightful place on this page.
Many of you may wonder why this cause is so near and dear to our hearts, and the answer is simple: Kate and I lost our father, Shirley G. Merritt, Jr. (aka "Pack" Merritt), on March 2, 2004 to Agent Orange related cancers, specifically, multiple myeloma. His battle with this cancer began in 1995 and he fought valiantly and bravely for almost ten years. Pack joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1965 and left for boot camp in August 1967. He served as an MP before reporting for duty in the Republic of Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division 3rd Battalion. He received the Purple Heart and 12 other commendations during his seven-year military service. And for this service and ultimate sacrifice, he gets no formal recognition on the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
We want to hear from more families like ours. We want to include more names on this page. We want America to know and remember that there are more who have died since the Vietnam War ended - and we want America to be aware of those who are suffering still from this horrible toxin. Please help us in any way you can: message us with pictures, names, stories, obituaries, etc. Add this page as a "friend" to your page and get the word out. Whatever you have to offer, we'll gladly receive and post to this page.
Let's remember them....NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN!
