About Me

I'm President and Chief Engineer of Gateway Mastering & DVD in Portland, Maine.I graduated from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. I have a BM degree in music education and a MM degree in performance (trumpet) and music literature. While at Eastman I also worked as an announcer at a commercial classical radio station, worked in the school's recording department, did a great deal of independent recording, and played Principal Trumpet with the Utica Symphony Orchestra. Phil Ramone, the famous producer of Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Chicago, Elton John and many others, directed Eastman's first recording workshop where I assisted him and hired me to work at Phil’s A&R Recording in New York.I learned the art of record mastering at A&R Recording in with Mr. Ramone as his mentor. I moved to Sterling Sound, Inc. shortly after it's incorporation and became Vice-President. At one time both Sterling Sound and Masterdisk were owned by the same public company. After 7 years at Sterling Sound I moved to Masterdisk Corporation where I was Vice President and Chief Engineer. 14 years ago I opened my own business, Gateway Mastering & DVD in Portland, Maine.I have mastered countless Gold and Platinum records. I am the first person to be honored with the Les Paul Award for "...individuals who have set the highest standards of excellence in recording and sound production over a period of many years". Subsequent winners of this award include Bruce Springsteen and Sting. I won numerous Pro Sound News Mastering Award and Mix Magazine’s TEC Award for "Outstanding Creative Achievement, Mastering Engineer” an unprecedented 12 times. Gateway Mastering Studios won the TEC Award for Mastering Studio 8 times including the very first year it was eligible to win.In December 1997 the studio began its DVD Authoring operations and Gateway was the first mastering studio in the world to offer DVD services.I contribute a great deal of time to educating other engineers and musicians about sound. I have been a panelist or spoken to many organizations including the Audio Engineering Society, SPARS, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science, Society of Broadcast Engineers and the Record Industry Association of America. I have been a guest lecturer at many universities and recording schools including McGill University, the Banff Centre for Performing Arts, Berklee College of Music in Boston, the University of Iowa, the State Universities of New York at Fredonia and Purchase, The University of Connecticut, the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine and the Full Sail School among others. In the past few years special articles on me and Gateway Mastering have appeared in the New York Times, The Boston Globe, USA Today and the Portland Press Herald and many US newspapers via the Associated Press.With my friend, Glenn Lorbecki, I am presently Co-chairman of the the 5,000 member Producers and Engineers Wing of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science. I am active in the Audio Engineering Society and was a past Chairman of the NY section. At recent AES conventions I chaired a Grammy Award winning panel of mastering engineers and was himself a panelist on four other panels covering surround sound artistry, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray.I and my wife, Gail, have created a scholarship to assist students of the Music School of the University of Southern Maine since the first year Gateway Mastering Studios started.At the 2007 AES convention in New York I was selected to be a "Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society." In November 2007 my protegee, Adam Ayan won 2 Latin Grammy Awards for his work on Juan Luid Guerra's Latin Grammy album of the year.

I love all kinds of music as long as it is performed really well. One day I mastered an avat garde classical record with Elliott Carter and they afternoon worked with AC/DC! Music is my life. It has great power to heal. I lveo it and I respect it.
