Haruhuani Spruce

About Me

The old Spruce stood alone on a hillside above a wild creek about six miles inland from the central Oregon coast. The land had been mostly clearcut fifty years before, but somehow the loggers had missed this tree. The rest of the hillside was growing up in Grasses and Alders who were coming in to heal the wounded Earth. Haruhuani, the ancient Spruce, grew squatty, spreading, as Sitka Spruce is wont to do in an open space, with many branches that reached all the way down to the ground. Sitting under those graceful branches one could begin the work of dreaming back all the ancient forests of the Earth.

Sounds Like: LOVE POEM by LESLIE MARMON SILKORain smell comes with the wind..... out of the southwest. Smell of sand dunes..... tall grass glistening..... in the rain. Warm raindrops that fall easy..... (this woman).......... The summer is born...... Smell of her breathing new life..... small gray toads on damp sand........... (this woman)..... whispering to dark wide leaves..... white moon blossoms dripping..... tracks in the sand........... Rain smell..... I am full of hunger..... deep and longing to touch..... wet tall grass, green and strong beneath........... This woman loved a man..... and she breathed to him..... her damp earth song. I am haunted by this story..... I remember it in cottonwood leaves..... their fragrance in the shade........... I remember it in the wide blue sky..... when the rain smell comes with the wind.Above are some photos of my desert home, including a number of views of the Gila Cliff Dwellings. As one gains altitude here in the Southwest, rainfall inceases. Thus we enjoy a landscape that varies from the raw Chihuahuan desert of the Rio Grande valley to the gentle grasslands and forests of the Gila Wilderness. Profoundly peaceful, beautiful land.................................................
