---> Anthem (accepted for publication - late 2009, early 2010)Anthem - Father & Son Collection of Poems - a paradoxical work of a retired military father tired of failed political policy and a son currently serving in Iraq who feels a sense of pride, yet sadness, in carrying out the mission.
" . . . it's brilliant, one of the best books of poetry on war I have ever read. In a dynamic collection of poems and journal entries, P.C. McKinnon (father) and J.A. Mac (son) confront the reader’s denial of the obsolescence and stupidity of war, the reader’s support of a violent war machine, the necessity of a soldier to follow orders at all times and in all situations; and, challenge the readers stereotypes of war and peace." The Cross
Sir Iain Moncreiffe speculated that Clan MacKinnon belonged to the kindred of Saint Columba - noting the MacKinnon Arms bore the hand of the saint holding the Cross - and the several MacKinnon abbots of Iona.
The Castle and the Ship
According to legend, the castle of Dunakin (today known as Caisteal Maol), near Kyleakin, was built by a Norwegian princess, known as "Saucy Mary", who married Findanus the claimed ancestor of Clan MacKinnon. The princess was to have collected the tolls of ships sailing through the narrows between the castle and the mainland, though Norse ships were exempt from her toll. To ensure that her taxes were paid a chain was stretched across the kyle. The Boar w/shank
A MacKinnon legend that is supposed to explain the chief's crest is of a MacKinnon who was hunting on the shores of Loch Scavaig in Skye. After becoming separated from his hunting party the MacKinnon spent the night in a cave for shelter. While preparing some venison which he was about to cook over an open fire he was attacked by a wild boar which charged into the cave. MacKinnon then drove the butchered deer's leg into the mouth of the boar, jamming it open, before killing the wild animal.Lost Generation
