Leonard Cameo Rowe Jr. was born on May 12, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother is Devonna Barnes Rowe, and his father is Leonard Cameo Rowe Sr. Devonna Rowe is a singer and professor of voice at Peabody Institute and Morgan State University.Leonard Sr. is a chemical engineer at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Cameo has a younger brother named Enoch Martin Rowe. Cameo grew up with his family in Harford County, Maryland. Both Cameo and his brother excelled in the arts at an early age. They studied cello and bass respectively, and participated in the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra (GBYO).In the summer of 2002, the GBYO toured Japan, performing concerts all over the country. In high school, both also earned All-State Orchestral honors. In addition to music, Cameo excelled in sports playing baseball, basketball, and soccer growing up. He later took up volleyball and was First Team All-County as the C.Milton Wright High School senior captain.Cameo received Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention for Academics and Music, as well as the National Achievement Scholarship. He accepted the Donald M. Henderson Scholarship in Engineering to attend the University of Pittsburgh and pursued a degree in chemical engineering.Before heading to Pittsburgh, Cameo began writing early drafts of Defenders of the Realm. The novel began as a short story for his 10th grade English teacher. While working on his engineering degree, he continued developing the novel.As his interest grew, he majored in industrial engineering and English to learn more about the business and creative aspects of developing a novel. He took on Publications positions within the university's Black Action Society and National Society of Black Engineers, expanding his design, typesetting, editing, and writing abilities. He translated these skills to Defenders of the Realm, and took steps towards self-publishing the novel in his senior year.Cameo Rowe graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008 and is continuing his education while developing his writing projects.
