The Baja Cancer Foundation was initiated this year (2008) for the purpose of spreading the awareness, helping children and adults with cancer, assisting clinics that desperately need assistance to treat people and helping all children in general and to bridge BAJA, Mexico and the United States with love. The founders, Ken Kosiorek (THE BAJA TURTLE) of San Diego and Julie Newell (THE PINK HUMMER) of Yorba Linda met at the 2008 BAJA 500 where they both joined the Baja 4 Breast Cancer Team in Ensenada, Mexico.
It was there that they realized there was so much to do and so much needed. Devoted Americans (Ken served five years in the US Navy as a Firefighter/Welder) first and proud of all we do here, but they felt there was so much fundraising, awareness, education and programs here, why not take some of this to Baja, Mexico where it is desperately needed by so many kids and adults.
Ken Kosiorek has traveled the world while in the US Navy to Africa, Cuba, Europe, North and South Americas, Middle East, Suez and Panama Canals and settled in San Diego 25 years ago. He is a Sales Engineer/Instructor for AIRGAS, Designs Metal Sculptures, camps/rides Quads at Glamis Dunes and races SOLO the BAJA 250, BAJA 500 and BAJA 1000 with a Honda XR650R. While racing gets you into the REAL WORLD Interior of BAJA and seeing the need to help the BAJA People, Ken asked Julie to help by coming to the 2008 BAJA 500 and she saw a need to help the small town clinics and orphanages. When Julie brought the Pink Hummer to Baja Mexico, it was if a new light was turned on to inspire the children to do well. All the kids waited in Line with SMILES as Julie signed the Baja 500 Map Posters that has her Pink Hummer posted on it. The Kids also got lot's of Photos with the Pink Hummer at Contingency Row.
What a Fun Day for those Kids in Baja!!
Julie Newell is a native Californian. She started out as a Police Officer went through the San Diego Police Academy. As a rookie, she transferred to Westminster police Department and at a latter time started her own construction company, www.alottah2o.com. Which she now does full time now. Currently she is one of the only females racing a old school flatbottom boat that her brothers (David, Rolf and Eric Sammons ) build for her since they all race also. (1980 hondo)
Her and her family are avid riders out at glamis sand dunes and ocotollio wells and her son Mason is building his own prerunner with the help of IMZZ Industries and plans to help the foundation any way he can. Mason was also very helpfull when he also came to the BAJA 500. Her daughter, Macy, has committed to assisting in office work and bookkeeping for the foundation, and thus this in not only a team effort but a family commitment.
Both of Julie’s Grandmothers had cancer and one lost her life because of it. It breaks her heart to see little children fighting this cancer battle and if The Pink Hummer makes them smile, gives them a few moments of laughter, helps to raise funds for there needs then she is “ALL INâ€.
BAJA CANCER FOUNDATION WILL BE VISITING CLINICS FROM THE BORDER TO ENSENADA TO PROMOTE AWARENESS AND FUNDRAISE FOR NEEDED EQUIPMENT, MEDICINE AND HELP..
Starting at the middle of November, the founders of Baja Cancer Foundation, will be meeting with doctors and visiting clinics to see what is needed and what to fundraise for in order to help as many as possible. The BCF is now in full force and we plan to visit clinics prior to the baja 1000. After meeting on Nov 5th for the Baja 1000 raffle at the WWW.FunBike.Com Center in San Diego, we plan to head to Mexico the very next day.
The children and adults will be looking forward to seeing us and we can bring on a smile with the Barbie Hummer, that will only be a start. Our actual reason is to see what each and every clinic needs to treat children and there parents, with any type of cancer. We will make a wish list for them and our goal is to get something for each clinic by the end of the year. So, more to follow, be at the NOVEMBER 5th, 2008 www.FunBike.com Center BajaPits raffle and we will start from there.
