KAZELL
A UK native and LA transplant, Kazell first arrived on US shores in 1991. Since then he has switched coasts and transitioned from "the hottest DJ in warm-up," (Los Angeles Times), to a label owner and peak hour headliner in demand worldwide.Upon his arrival on the East Coast Kazell immediately made an impact in the US club scene. People eagerly embraced his sound, an electric and refreshing fusion of dub, tribal, and breaks layered over a techno-house base. In his home base of Atlanta, he quickly became a favorite resident at the city’s pre-eminent electronic night Liquid Groove, now known as Liquified.
After a few years of playing up and down the East Coast, Kazell relocated to Los Angeles. Within months of heading west Kazell had secured residencies at the largest clubs and parties on the West Coast, including Spundae - L.A., Giant, and Avalon. Shortly thereafter Liquified followed suit moving its headquarters to Los Angeles. Kazell was immediately re-enlisted as its resident DJ for all events, including the now legendary Sasha & Digweed Liquified parties at the Mayan Theater. In fact, Kazell soon became the only LA based DJ that heavy-hitters like Sander Kleinenberg, Deep Dish, and John Digweed would request to play alongside while in the city.
In 2008 Kazell was reunited with Sasha and John Digweed, when they asked him to join him on their groundbreaking Spring Club Tour 2008, the most ambitious electronic music event America had witnessed since the pioneering Delta Heavy tour. Kazell played 18 dates with the duo, taking him across America and into Mexico and Canada.
In addition to his work as a DJ Kazell has amassed a solid body of work in the studio. His critically acclaimed 2003 debut release Driven, was voted "best compilation of the year" by Jive Magazine. His tracks have also appeared on top labels including Global Underground and Lost Language and been featured on compilations from icons like Sander Kleinenberg and Nick Warren.
Kazell has recently branched out into sound design. In 2007 he was enlisted by the legendary film composer Harry Gregson Williams to add his own unique twist to the sound of the Disney blockbuster "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," due out Summer 2008.
Currently Kazell continues to host his bi-monthly label residency, Influx-Audio, at LA’s premier electronic venue, Avalon Hollywood. He has also been busy in the studio putting together a new band project which he hopes to tour early 2009.
KAZELL HITS THE ROAD WITH SASHA AND JOHN DIGWEED FOR SPRING CLUB TOUR 2008
LA Based DJ Will Open 18 Shows of 21 Leg TourLos Angeles, CA – March 20, 2008 – It was announced today that Kazell will be reunited with Sasha and John Digweed on their upcoming Spring Club Tour 2008. Kazell will open 18 of the 21 dates, joining the duo on the road for their April 2nd show in Boston and staying with them until they return to Southern California for their Coachella date.
The Spring Club Tour 2008 is the first time that Sasha and John Digweed are touring North America extensively in six years, taking them through 21 cities landing at Coachella on Saturday April 26th where the duo will be headlining the Dance tent.
The last time Sasha and John Digweed toured the US was in 2002 on their infamous Delta Heavy Tour, known as the most important DJ tour to ever hit America. The tour forever raised the bar for large-scale electronic music events. While most DJ tours are all about taking flights from city to city, this Spring Sasha, John and Kazell will be hitting the pavement, bussing it through the country.
Kazell has played with John Digweed and Sasha frequently, both as individuals and as a DJ duo. He was first acquainted with the pair through Sasha and John Digweed’s Northern Exposure Tour and went on to play alongside them at Liquified’s legendary parties at Los Angeles’ Mayan Theater. Since then he has opened for both artists in locations ranging from Mexico City to Miami.
“It is a real honor to be invited to join the tour and open for Sasha and John,†said Kazell. “Whether headlining or opening I am always thinking about what an audience takes away from a show. The Spring Club Tour is really about setting and creating a mood within the clubs that gives Sasha and John the best possible atmosphere in which to perform.â€
“When putting this tour together, we needed someone who could open the shows properly,†said John Digweed. “Having worked with Kazell for many years touring clubs and big events he is the perfect choice for us. He really understands how to set the mood at the start of the night, filling the dancefloor teasing the crowd and leaving them ready for us to take over. A rare talent in this day and age. I am sure Kazell will be winning over a whole new fan base when they hear his opening sets.â€
"We love Kazell, he has opened for us many times before and always does an amazing job,†said Sasha. “The first part of the night is so important. It sets the tone for where the music is going that night. With Kazell, it's always beautiful, interesting and forward thinking. Very happy to have him on the bus with us."
In recent years Kazell has transitioned from a much sought after opener to headlining DJ, in demand across America and beyond. His original tracks have appeared on some of the world’s top labels, including Global Underground, Lost Language and his own Influx Audio Imprint, as well as compilation CDs including Sander Kleinenberg’s Renaissance and Nick Warren’s GU Paris. His 2003 release Driven, propelled him onto the global stage, and was labeled 2003’s best compilation of the year by Jive Magazine.
Kazell’s sound is a fusion of many diverse genres. It incorporates elements of dub and funk and presents them on a foundation of forward thinking house music. Strong rhythm and bass are crucial to Kazell’s style, yet he is able to switch between melodic elements that are warm and soulful and tough and electronic. Always at the heart of Kazel’s DJ sets and music is a desire to present quality tracks put together in way that keeps dancefloors rocking while appealing to both intellectual and causal listeners.
This past year has seen Kazell take time out from producing his own tracks to concentrate on building his reputation as a sound designer in Hollywood. He has been able to work alongside the legendary film composer Harry Gregson Williams (Shrek, Kingdom of Heaven) on the upcoming Disney blockbuster, Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Kazell has continued to DJ regularly in Los Angeles, holding down his always-popular bi-monthly Influx Audio residency at LA’s premier electronic music venue, Avalon Hollywood.
