mamá vudú
During the last few years, MAMA VUDU has established itself as the most important offbeat band in Ecuador and probably one of the most important bands of the decade, mainly owing to their particular stylistic evolution and their intense activity within the underground movement.
Since its creation, the band..s aesthetic proposals placed it as a reference of the ..alternative.., even though they didn..t feel at all comfortable with this cliche qualification and while emerging form the punk movement, they have managed to disentangle themselves from any genre that limits their development and have evolved towards and eclectic, dark and -why not- original style.
With their last album, MACROSENSOR, they managed to consolidate more than 10 years of work by producing an album complex in concepts and moods but simple in it formal result. The Rolling Stone (Latin) magazine chose this work as one of the 50 best albums of 2004 and the single ..Autopista.. was on the top of the independent music list on 88.1 FM (Quito) during the summer of 2005. The album..s promotional tour took them to lead several music festivals around the country, being able to play together with bands such as Louise Attaque, a very prestigious French band.
This is the result of a complex job, not always made public given the band..s temperament, always in search of sounds that are far away from the fashion and tendencies supported by media. The band produced their first album in 1995 with very low exposure, and it is only in 1999, when they are invited to play in the ROCK DESDE EL VOLCAN festival along bands such as Lucybell, Babasonicos, La ley, Volumen 0, etc. when they start creating their own path.
The absence of bass in the band..s format and their ambiguous lyrics puts it close to English post punk of North American nowave, but their Latin identity gives them a more intense vision of the aesthetical such as with their LUNA LOMBRIZ album, with special moments as ..Incendialo todo.., one of the most important songs of the independent rock movement in Ecuador.
In 2001 they release the AEROCLUB album, with a more polished sound and clearer intentions, obtaining several radio hits such as ..Vortex.., ..Espuma Negra.. and ..Ladrando.. (currently being remixed by Caceria de Lagartos into ska/fusion). This album gave the band an opportunity to present themselves to a younger and heterodox audience, open to new sounds. Their position against the media and their work form the independent side has established MAMA VUDU as a legend in Ecuador. The videos, recordings and concerts are followed by a strong offbeat base of followers.
They have also tried to energize the local independent movement with the TOCADAS.COM web portal, fully devoted to the diffusion of independent music and concerts.
