Ian Naismith

About Me

Hailing from Osprey, Florida, a small village due south of Sarasota, Florida - Naismith has been an experimental guitarist and musician for over 25 years.
After numerous recordings in the 1980's, and years of dormancy, Naismith finally started putting his vast knowledge and practice of widely varied musics to CD in 2001, and has released 9 titles through 2005.
Naismith's music defies categorization, but he is heavily influenced by natural and organic sounds, acoustic ethnic music, electric world music, progressive rock, avant garde jazz, and concrete experimental music. It is not unusual for a CD to have over 100 different instruments. Needless to say, the recordings have a broad array of dynamics. Naismith's approach to electric guitar displays a wide range of beautifully strange textures and unusual harmonic layers, and his solo work is truly unique - what Naismith likes to call "serpentine guitar" due to the slippery melodic lines.
Fans of guitarists David Torn and Steve Tibbetts; or the fourth-world practitioners Jon Hassell and Bill Laswell would surely gravitate to Ian Naismith's music.
