funk, blues, pop, indie rock, dance, jam, rock out.
The Welcome Special formed after the dissolution of shortlived summer project The Sweet Rebellion. Thomas Bullen (23), Kayla Ashby (18), Daniel Marlowe (22) and Anna Booth (21) began working on a new breed of funk and dance music and are now ready to present this strange brew to the world. You can listen to three songs, pinpoint, slow, and feel it, right here. These songs were recorded with the help of friend of the band (and once drummer for the sweet rebellion) Rory--the band spent less than 4 hours recording on a single saturday in late February, 2008.
More about the band:
Thomas is a former member of the band Perfect Confusion--now more well known as Cage The Elephant--a popular indie-funk-punk band from Bowling Green. He’s been playing guitar and writing music for 13 years now.
Fun Fact:
Thomas is left handed, and he’s that hypocritical kind of vegetarian that eats fish.
Anna’s musical ability laid dormant for years, until she got an itch one day at 20 and decided she wanted to learn to play cello. She played cello in TSR and bought a bass guitar and played it for the first time on the very night that The Welcome Special formed.
Fun Fact:
Anna thought of the band’s name. OR she may have read it on a sign somewhere. But either way it was her idea.
Daniel has been playing drums for years, and played in many other bands. He’s also a skilled hand drum and djembe player who has performed in west African drum circles at International fairs. This fall, Daniel is going to attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for longest time playing drums. The record is currently 80-something hours (with a 15 minute break every 8 hours) and, with Guinness on hand keeping time, Daniel hopes to go 100 hours!
Fun Fact:
Marlowe (you can call him Marlowe too) loves birds and hopes to be an ornithologist--if this whole drumming thing doesn’t work out. :]
Kayla is the band’s youngest member at 18. Her small frame and shock of blonde hair conceal a powerful voice that could easily be confused for the voice a veteran 60’s soul singer. This is her first attempt at fronting a band and she’s ready to rock!
Fun Fact:
Kayla almost always wears red lipstick and she has a not so secret love for 80s hair metal (yuck!) :]
