The Hero Bros (Dave and Mike) are two Puerto Rican, Dominican and Egyptian brothers who grew up in a small beach town of Clearwater, FL. They were born into a musical family with a grandfather that moved from the Dominican Republic to New York at the age of 22, in the late 1920’s with his wife and three children. On the front page of the New York Times, after playing the world famous Stork Club in 1932 with his orchestra, it read, “Luis Herrero brings the Meringue to New York.â€
Now the Herrero Brothers, known to the Chicago community as “The Hero Bros†continue their grandfather’s legacy, in Chicago, IL.
Mike, the younger of the two brothers moved to Chicago to attend the Art Institute of Chicago on a full Presidential Scholarship based on his merit as a visual artist. While pursuing his degree, he began producing hip hop beats for underground rap icons S.P.O. and Lumba Blackwood of Rubber Room. Dave, after receiving his degrees in Psychology and Early Childhood Education, moved to Austin, TX to continue his education in music, learning from and sharing the stage with the greatest names in blues and R&B music.
While in Austin, Dave was the touring guitarist for R&B / Soul legend Archie Bell and the Drells (“Tighten Up!â€) while also backing up Austin favorites like Matt Powell, and he began touring the world with these artists, and under his own name.
It was after a Scandinavian tour in 2000, that fate stepped in.
“I had a layover in Chicago after a tour, and instead of giving me a hotel room for a night, I asked the ticket clerk to give me a ticket for a week down the roadâ€, Dave recalls. “My brother was at work (as an assistant to R. Kelly at the time), and his roommate let me in and I crashed at his house in Humbolt Park. He woke me up when he got back from work, and I didn’t really know that he was working on music. He was making some really strong beats, and working with some local underground rap legends of Chicago, and I felt that there was a really unique opportunity for my brother and I to start working on music together.†For the next four years, the brothers traveled between Austin and Chicago, enlisting the help of the amazing musicians Dave had come across in his travels, to produce music, that later became the first compositions that they sold to Harpo Productions, beginning their long and fruitful relationship making music for the Oprah Winfrey Show, which they currently continue to do.
In 2004, feeling that Austin was no longer fulfilling all if his creative and business endeavors, Dave took a leap of faith, and moved to Chicago with money that he had saved after one of his European tours. Four months later, again through a twist of fate, began making music for Harpo Productions. The same fateful evening that Mike linked up with the music director for Harpo, through Jam and Filthy Rich, of Time Management, Jam and Rich also pointed Mike in the direction of J Milla, the manager at the time for the legendary rap group Psycho Drama.
“J Milla brought Yung Buk through to the studio, and we had a strong vibe right off the batâ€, Dave recalls. “We had that Texas connection, cause they were signed to Suave House right before they folded. He played me some of his material, I played him some of my songs and we hit it off right away. I could tell this guy was serious as a heart attack, and just a very creative guy in general. That led to a collaboration on a song of mine called “Fallenâ€, which was a blues hip hop hop collaborative, and it was on from there.â€
Through that connection, the Hero Bros and Yung Buk produced an underground cult classic called “Louderâ€, featuring Yung Buk, Chicago Shawn (of Qualo) and Turtle Banxx (Speedknot Mobstas), that was released on a limited pressing of a Mike Love mixtape called “Universal Sessions: Psycho Dramaâ€.
In the interim, the Hero Bros produced another classic underground song called “Higher†for underground hip hop icon, Profound, which went out on a Mass Hysteria Mixtape, as well as producing and receiving steady airplay on “Favorite Thangs†for Qualo (Universal / Movement), and two albums for Lumba BlackWood of Rubber Room. They have also produced 5 songs on a new album for Psyde FX of Psycho Drama and several songs for the Queen of Psycho Drama, Newsense.
Other Chicago artists that the Hero Bros have produced for include Marvo, Ready, Q.U.E. Billah, Preast G, Chicago Shawn and King Ken Winz (of Qualo), Turtle Banxx, among many, many others.
They have also expanded their horizons in the world of music for television, producing music for the Tyra Banks Show and MTV’s “Rob and Bigâ€.
Dave has also recently completed another European tour, and has self produced and released a blues album entitled “Austin to Chicago†that is receiving rave reviews throughout the world. Currently, The Hero Bros are pioneering a blues / hip hop collaborative effort, with the help and guidance of their “Uncle†Felix Reyes, one time Dallas native, now relocated to Chicago.
Recently, through underground rap icon Mil Tickit, the Hero Bros have begun working with Neo Soul artist Jake Oh, of Stockholm, Sweden and have many new exiting projects on the horizon. They are very excited about diversifying their business and all of the new opportunities that lie ahead for 2008 and beyond.
