Escape Music
3 Zero Records
Escape Music U.K. and 3 Zero Records are proud to anounce the re issue of "Power" by Atlantic.
First released back in 1994 on the Music For Nations. Bellaphon and Pony Canyon labels. British band Atlantic raised many eyebrows with their one-off release which can be ranked alongside bands such as "Whitesnake", "Journey", "Dare" , "FM" , "Heartland" and "Shy" (Tony Mills guests on the album also!). Atlantic band members include Simon Harrison on guitar and keyboards and the great Phil Bates (Trickster) on Lead Vocals, guitars and keyboards. The album had so much potential at the time and ended up, in its first incarnation known as, "PAF" in the John Peel Hall of Fame.
A Little Bit Of History..........
Atlantic came about as a result of a song writing session at The Old Smithy recording studio in Kempsey UK back in 1991. Simon wrote a song with Jules Benjamin called 'Can't Hold On'. They recorded it and started looking for a vocalist. One day Phil Bates walked into the Smithy to record a vocal on a commercial. Paul Hoare, a very talented engineer/producer, suggested that Simon check him out. Phil had exactly the right kind of voice that Simon was looking for and so they set about writing songs for the album that became "Power".
Atlantic was originally called P.A.F. Their track "It's only love" made it onto the then legendary, Radio 1, Tommy Vance show along with other plays on national and local radio rock shows. Sessions followed on the even more legendary 'John Peel' show, again on radio 1, and an induction into the late 'Peels' hall of fame, a very great honour!
Andy Duncan, a truly awesome drummer, was brought in along with the impeccable guitar skills of Andy Evans and the blistering bass of Paul Hoare. The studio line up was completed by the ever talented keyboards of Chris Taylor. At the end of recording the production moved to Rich Bitch Studioplex in Birmingham to record backing vocals and mix. The 3m machine at the Smithy was having a few problems so it was decided to complete the project in Birmingham. It was at Rich Bitch, that we were joined by the great Tony Mills and David Saylor for backing vocals and overdubs. They, along with Jo Bates and Pete Green, also awesome singers did a fantastic job and were a great compliment to the vocal talents of Phil Bates.
Mixing began and P.A.F. were joined by the late Colin Thurston whom Phil had suggested would bring that "American" feel to the mix that the band were looking for. The Album was duly mixed and mastered at the Townhouse in London UK. Many thanks to Colin for all his hard work, may he rest in peace.
Originally, "Power" was due to be released by Total Records, but due to the decline in sales in the rock market, they eventually pulled out. The record was licensed to Bellaphon Records in Germany on a European license and deals with Music for Nations and Pony Canyon followed very soon after. It was with the first single release in Europe that the band changed their name to "Atlantic".
