Ashton Harrell is an unassuming thirteen-year-old who has been graced with an undeniable talent to sing. The moment his hand clutches a microphone, his audience is reeled in by the magnetism of his performance.
He found his voice at just four years old while still residing in his hometown of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. “We were at karaoke and I decided I wanted to go up on stage and sing. I’ve been singing ever since then.â€
From that night, Ashton began performing in plays and talent shows, appearing in several commercials before being discovered by Disney.
“In Virginia, there was a Radio Disney group audition. I auditioned and they chose me for a group of seven singers.†At ten years old, Ashton became a part of the pop group RD7, opening for such acts as Raven, Kelly Clarkson, The Cheetah Girls, Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers.
The group toured the Virginia area for a year and a half before Disney began discontinuing groups, including RD7. “Because of the whole ‘Britney Spears shaved her head stuff’ that was going on at that time,†Ashton explains.
Ashton, along with his RD7 group-mate, Celeste, formed a new group called No Limit. “We kind of do the same thing that RD7 did. We perform a little bit down in North Carolina and some in Richmond. We did the state fair and stuff like that.â€
“I auditioned for Can You Duet. We made it through to the second round in the auditions, but that was it. They didn’t pick any kids, so I didn’t feel bad. Since then, I’ve been back to Nashville and filmed a show called Nashville Spotlight. I performed three songs. That will air in February.†Ashton has also been invited to audition in Nashville for a new reality singing competition that will be aired right after American Idol. In the summer of 2008, Ashton attended ‘The School Of Pop’ in Hollywood, California. This sparked his endeavor to write original music with the help of professionals. He was named by Cartoon Network as one of 20 of America ’s Most Talented Kids and recently started guitar lessons. All the while, maintaining straight-A honor student status in school.
“I’m just a kid. I play basketball here and there. I like to watch football. Since we live on the beach, we go to the beach a lot. I don’t skateboard, coz if so, I’d probably break my neck. I spend a lot of time singing and rehearsing. I’d like to be rich and famous, but, even if I were singing at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere, I’d be fine. As long as I get a good education and I’m singing, I’m okay.†Ashton is looking forward to a long career in music with patience seemingly beyond his years, “It’s slow and steady. You just have to take one step at a time and see what happens.â€
