Ray’s musical life began at the age of fourteen when he got hold of his first acoustic guitar. A year or so later he was picking away at an electric guitar inspired by Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher and Joe Satriani. At seventeen he was already playing gigs with Bad Taste having fun with songs of the previously mentioned musicians along with material by Slayer and Ozzy Osbourne.
Somewhere along the line he quit playing for a couple of years but was back in 1996 and could be spotted playing fiddle at trad sessions (groups of musicians playing Irish traditional music in pubs). At the same time he played guitar with China Red, a pop/folk band that included his sister Colette on vocals. Never one to worry about mixing his musical styles, Ray went on to record a traditional album with Mactire, an Irish traditional group, as well as with Cadenza, described as a Celtic folk group.
In 2008 Ray was finally persuaded to record his first solo album ‘Out of Sight’ and after a tough year, this was released on May 1st 2009. According to Hotpress magazine the album skirts a number of genres including “pastoral folk picking, gentle country shuffles, Cajun jigs, and choral numbersâ€. That said it’s musical coherence comes through Ray’s beautiful voice and melodic approach.
There are plenty videos on this site (search through the blog to find more) and you can listen to recorded tracks on the player above (it even ‘pops out’ so you can listen while working on your computer). Most of all enjoy!
