Border pipes and Flutes

About Me

I studied instrument making at Newark technical college 1989-1992 . I made my first set of pipes while working for oboe makers TW Howarth sometime in the early 1990's. In 1999 I moved to Bruton in Somerset and started my own business, working initialy as a sub-contractor to other makers ( TW Howarth, Jon Swayne and Geert Le Jeune) In 2001 I started to make instruments under my own name , first flutes and later bagpipes. During this time I have been involved in a number of musical projects ,notably as a founder of the now legendary Citizen Camembert. From 2003-2006 I was a member of the band Fiendhandle along with Simon Raine and Woody Woodward. The tune "House of Mud" is taken from the Fiendhandle album and is included here as it was the first recording made using my own instruments. In 2006 I collaborated with Woody and others to produce the now infamous "Music of the Martian Bagpipe" album. 2007 saw the release of the "Stick" album, a collection of tunes written and recorded as a showcase for my pipes. Woody and I continue to write and perform : myspace.com/domandwoody All of the albums mentioned here are available from www.screamingmavis.com

Developed for ease of playing, this flute is popular with small handed players. SERIES 2 Features a wider bore and larger tone holes typical of a “Pratten” flute. A more strident tone, particularly on the lower notes. SERIES R This is a “warts and all” copy of a flute by Rudall and Rose C1830. MATERIALS African blackwood and boxwood are available as standard, other timbers subject to availability. Tip rings can be made from brass, artificial ivory, boxwood or Sterling silver. KEYWORK My keywork is handmade by myself and can be tailored to a players specific needs. I do not charge extra for left handed flutes. Pillar mounted keys can be retro fitted to any of my flutes. Keys are silver plated, an option of gold plate is also available.
