The classic Alice Cooper group lineup consisted of guitarists Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith as well as Furnier. The band started out recording for Frank Zappa's label in California but found greater success in Detroit, Cooper's home town, with stronger promotion from a larger label. Their first hit single soon was 1971's "I'm Eighteen".The band's shock and glam theatrics gave their shows a lot media attention and the band capitalized on sensational tabloid journalism, even when they got the story wrong. Attempts by politicians and pressure groups fueled the success of their live performances and Alice Cooper started breaking box office records. The height of Alice Cooper's theatrics was his fake "death" onstage, either by beheading or by hanging.Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper. Cooper favored theatrics and other band members preferred to concentrate on the music. The band split up in 1974. Alice Cooper released the solo album Welcome to My Nightmare and it rose to Top 10. The 1975 televison special The Nightmare was the first video album. Cooper's music influenced many later musicians and helped shape the sound of punk rock and early heavy metal. Many of his following albums had limited commercial success but went on to become cult classics. In the 1980s Alice Cooper became more experimental.Cooper battled alcoholism and was hospitalized in 1977. But it wasn't until the 1980s that he became a born again Christian and sobered up. He scored a 1989 hit "Poison" and revived his career. He made cameo appearances in several feature films including the Nightmare On Elm Street film Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare and Wayne's World. In 1996, Alice Cooper sang the role of Herod on the London Cast soundtrack of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.Cooper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. On January 26, 2004, Cooper's radio show, Nights with Alice Cooper, began airing in several US cities. The program showcases classic rock, Alice's personal stories about his life as a rock icon, obscure rock history facts, as well as interviews and special segments. In 2005, Cooper released his 24th studio album Dirty Diamonds, his highest charting album since 1994. A plethora of musicians from Bob Dylan to Kiss to Michael Jackson to Kurt Cobain have gone on record as Alice Cooper fans as well as Mae West, Groucho Marx, and Salvador Dali.
His latest album 'Along Came A Spider' was just released worldwide which takes us back to the roots of the early Cooper meets Dirty Diamonds.
