About Me

Born in Westbury and raised in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, Baldwin Blaq's love for music and singing began at an early age. Like food or water, music was an integral part of his upbringing and by the time he finished high school, he was well known among his peers as an outstanding vocalist and prolific songwriter. In 1991 he spent a providential school holiday with his cousin Jerome who broadened his musical horizons by introducing him to Funk/Rock & Soul through the artist Prince. Baldwin now considers him to be ‘the most influential musician of our time.’A year later he began a friendship with Tyrone Naryan and together they founded an accapella group called Bus Stop Harmony (BSH). BSH consisted of himself, Tyrone, Aldrin Simons and Ivor Job. Other vocalists joined and left the group in its lifetime but the four of them remained at the core. They achieved local success in 1993 and 1994 and were booked for club performances, beauty pageants, fetes and talent shows. Their repertoire consisted of classic R&B covers from the likes of Boys2Men and Shai. Due to irreconcilable differences the group disbanded at the end of 1994.As Baldwin grew and matured, his musical taste became more refined. He listened to and was influenced by Prince, D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Babyface, Brian Mcknight and Curtis Mayfield to name a few. These influences can be detected in Baldwin’s music which he describes as ‘neo-soul hip hop with a twist of funk.’I late 2000 he met a kindred spirit in the form of Jerome Bezuidenhout (J-Earth), a talented bassist and producer. Over the next few years they experimented with their own neo-soul sound and created some of the most soulful grooves never heard.Early this year, Baldwin met the young up-and-coming house DJ and hip-hop producer Matthew Garton. He did a few hooks for Matthews’s hip-hop artists. In Baldwin, Matt recognised a talent that can not be wasted and have subsequently come to a recording agreement. He is currently the lead vocalist for a concept band called Stacy Angel. The band is working on their debut album that promises to change the face of R&B soul music in SA. real editor best profile tools real editor best profile tools
