For valley-dwelling Utahns, there’s long been a mystique surrounding the very un -Utahn mountain town of Park City. Folks down the mountain “ooh†and “ahh†at Park City’s $65-a -plate fine dining, unspoiled mountain panoramas and ability to attract film industry elite during the Sundance Film Festival. But it’s Park City’s circuit of illustrious clubs and music venues, such as Harry O’s and Suede, that have added perhaps the most mystique to the city.
And it’s all thanks to club fixtures Olde and Tara Cinelli, the husband-and-wife team responsible for opening Harry O’s in Park City.
Tara, 36, and Olde, 38, (along with Doug Illman, who also owned a Harry O’s in California), opened the high-profile club in 1998, starting from scratch to slowly become a hotspot adored by celebrities and locals alike.
The Cinellis left Harry O’s to pursue a new project. Their dream was to create a venue that was as much music venue as it was a bar. And in 2002, Tara and Olde opened club Suede. “We brought local and national bands that people would drive all the way up to Park City to see,†Tara says.
Like a bottle of rich Unibroue ale, all good things come to an end. And the good thing about beer is you can always buy more.
The Cinellis sold the bar in November 2007 (keeping the Suede name for future use), but already had plans for a new endeavor.
“We wanted to bring what Suede does down to Salt Lake,†Tara says.
Tara and Olde weren’t the only ones with a plan. Back at the former Suede, its new owner, Robert Fenn, was scheming a new shtick for the club. And though Fenn couldn’t be reached for comment, going off of the MySpace page and Web site, the new Playground seems to include a bit more glitz and glimmer.
The former Suede will open its doors for the first time as The Playground on Jan. 25. DJ Dik Richie from Las Vegas will spin at The Playground’s grand opening party and introduce clubgoers to the venue’s new look.
“It’s my first time in Utah, so I’m going to show them what I’m all about!†says DJ Dik Richie.
But seeing the former Suede transform into The Playground doesn’t come without sentiment for Tara.
“We put heart and soul into establishing Suede, so I want it to succeed,†she says, explaining that though she has a new project, she wants to help book bands for The Playground on the side.
Now, bringing live music to Salt Lake City is Tara and Olde’s main prerogative. Proving they rarely take a break from expanding Utah nightlife, the parents of two toddlers opted for another hand in the club-swapping card game after selling Suede. In addition to buying the rights to the bar within Saltair—the Salt Lick—the Cinellis sought out a venue to host their influx of band bookings. As fate would have it, General Manager Frank Borunda was looking for someone to book bands for Salt Lake club The Paladium.
“We both checked each other out before getting into it because we were leery of people in the club scene, but when we met Frank, he was the sweetest guy that shared our same vision to eventually have shows on five-plus nights a week, like the old Zephyr,†Tara says. [Borunda declined to be interviewe d - ed.]
The Cinellis, under the name of Suede Entertainment, entered into a 50-50 partnership with The Paladium. Considering the layout of the space—it hosts a large stage and can hold up to 1,000 people—both parties decided it would make the perfect venue for live shows. The Paladium opened December 2007, marketed as “Suede at The Paladium,†and is currently open only on concert nights.
But that’s OK for now, says to Tara, who marvels that the venue has received rave reviews.
“The customers loved our cheap drinks. They were like, ‘$3 for a beer? That’s cheap!’ And after the bands were done playing, they’d ask us, ‘When can we come back?’ â€
Tara also explained that the club doesn’t make money off the bands, but by gathering a big crowd with “good bands and cheap drinks.â€
But Tara, speaking in a voice of utmost sincerity, says that it’s not about the money; it’s about experiencing the joy that comes from serving customers.
“We are very much in touch with our customers and bands and they know us, we know them.â€
