The Roxas

About Me

This page is a tribute to one of the most influential fuzz rock bands in Wisconsin. After the break up of Wisconsin indie rock band Hey Hey Wait,Tommy Roxas and his sister Melody Roxas decided to join up and form a band called The Melancholy. They created a few tracks and played a few shows with a drum machine, but the music has a stale feel and it wasn't clicking. It wasn't long before Corey Macbeth heard about the about the duo's struggle. They had tried out many drummers, but none of them could achieve the sound the were looking for. Corey decided to try out and he instantly clicked with the feel. Tommy and Mel decided he was the drummer they were looking for. After a few practices the trio stomped out four great/raw tracks. They played a show at a local gig where all the strange bands in Wisconsin play. After there set, audience member,Holiday Smithie (Haggard Records LTD) loved their sound and wanted to help them put out a nice studio demo.
In September of 1997 the trio recorded and finished the 8 track demo "WIRES" and decided to make their permanent band name The Roxas because of a dream Corey Had. The album "WIRES" was a local hit and can be found in indie record stores in Wisconsin today. In the same month The Roxas headlined a four day festival in Baraboo,Wisconsin called "Haggard Fest" which was the landmark of a rising of a new underground scene called "Fuzz Rock". The Roxas went on to play shows from Saint Louis to Boston to Seattle.
In October of 1999 The Roxas released a two disk album called "FEED/HANDS" which was more dark and ambient then "WIRES". The Roxas went on to tour, but were feeling out of the game. In February of 2000 Tommy Roxas was found dead in his van due to a xanax/LSD/alcohol overdose. (A few hours before Tommy was found he was reported to acting strange and talking about how he wasn't who he used to be. This leads many to believe he commit suicide.) The Roxas were traumatized along with the Wisconsin underground music scene. They pronounced on February 15,2000 they were done and couldn't move on without Tommy.
Though The Roxas was never in the mainstream music scene their influence can still be heard in many bands in the Mid West. They will forever live on as a great band that died before their time.
