Creative Music Workshop

About Me

The Creative Music Workshop offers a fresh and ever-changing means of exploration for innovative creators of modern music. This new partnership (CMW of NYC) is centered on the idea that a person learns to make art by exploring the process of making art and thereby creating art, instead of learning techniques that may be used to create art sometime in the future. In this way, the usual division of students & teachers is suspended and people are simply making art together. The main objective is the creation of new works both from individuals and various groups. The primary form of exploration is grounded in the immediacy of improvisation, which is about relationship and communication. Observation, itself, is the most powerful and fundamental tool available to all. This journey thrives on diversity be it age, level of ability, or artistic background. A Workshop session often makes use of movement, vocal sounding, and spoken word without the use of instruments to experience the essence of improvisation. Style and Form are addressed simply as further refinements of expression fundamentally rooted in basic musical conversation. In the planning stages for many years, CMW officially started in 2006.Members of the faculty have taught at many different institutions including the Brooklyn Conservatory, Friends School, Queens College CPSM, JCC on the Palisades, Naropa University, Augusta State University, University of Colorado Boulder, Arizona State University, Hofstra University, the Village Community School, Musical Kids, the School for Improvisational Music and the Music School of Westchester.
