About Me

X-TRA is a quarterly art journal published in Los Angeles since 1997. The editorial board is composed of Los Angeles-based artists and writers. X-TRA provides an expansive outlet for projects related to contemporary visual arts. We publish diverse critical approaches including expansive features, historical essays, commissioned artist's projects, interviews, and substantive exhibition and book reviews.

By subscribing to X-TRA, each quarter you will receive, in perfect-bound print, enticing new articles, interviews, reviews, poems, and columns. And you will save a hefty percentage off the $7.50 cover price.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Announcing X-TRA's first artist edition, a beautiful hankerchief designed by LA-based artist Karl Haendel.

This black cotton hankerchief sports one of Haendel's signature scribbles. Haendel develops the scribbles by enlarging quick doodles and re-drawing them purposefully, transforming these insignificant and unconscious bursts into imposing formal compositions.

The hankies are shipped starched but a single washing turns them soft and maleable. So, you can frame it as is, or wash it and use as a hankie. Or, get two and have the best of both worlds.

Limited edition of 100, screenprint on 100% cotton, 14 in. sq.

About the artist:
Karl Haendel lives and works in Los Angeles. His work has been shown widely, including exhibitions at MOCA, Los Angeles, MOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, the Serpentine Gallery, London and the Songzhuang Art Museum, Beijing. He has had recent solo shows at Anna Helwing Gallery in Los Angeles and Harris Lieberman in New York.
