"Call it rockabilly, call it 50's & 60's punk, call it raw, call it fast, but you can't call it motionless. I just call it rock n' roll."
-Maximum Rock and Roll
"Cleveland's Cowslingers are the surest bet going for the modern roots-hillbilly-rock fan."
-Magnet
The Cowslingers played their unique brand of cowpunkabilly from 1991 to 2003, leaving a slew of indie releases in their wake. With one foot in underground indie garage punk, and the other in the gray area between alt-country and rockabilly, The Cowslingers offered up a unique sound.
As an illustration of the band’s unique blend of cowpunkabilly, The Cowslingers were voted the 1 Country Band in Cleveland by the readers of the Cleveland Free Times in 1999 and then voted Cleveland's Best Punk Band in 2000. Following that, The Cowslingers were voted Best Rockabilly Band for 2001, 2002, and 2003 by The Cleveland Free Times. All of this with no changes in band lineup or sound – a cowpunkabilly trifecta!!!
The Cowslingers have 28 releases to their credit, including 9 full-length CD's. With hundreds of live shows, appearances at South By Southwest, Garage Shock, Sleazefest, Ottawa Blues Festival, Nashville Extravaganza, and tours of Canada, Spain, Germany, and Belgium, The Cowslingers were no strangers to the stage. Equal parts Johnny Cash / Ramones / Link Wray / and home-brewed moonshine, The Cowslingers were for people that still liked their rock n' roll loud, twangy, and trashy.
The Cowslingers shared the stage with such luminaries as The Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Reverend Horton Heat, Flat Duo Jets, Southern Culture on the Skids, Big Bobby and the Night Cats, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, Jason and The Scorchers, Link Wray, The Woggles, The Swingin’ Neckbreakers, Dick Dale, Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys, Hasil Adkins, The Belmont Playboys, Laika and the Cosmonauts, Sleepy LaBeef, Man or Astroman, Nashville Pussy, The Paladins, Los Straitjackets, Dwight Yoakum, The Backsliders, Drive By Truckers, El Vez, Satan’s Pilgrims, The Lyres, The Fleshtones, and dozens of others.
Today three of the former Cowslingers - Greg, Ken, and Leo - are in the Whiskey Daredevils, while Bob went on to form The Jack Fords and Tony now plays bass in Martini Five-O.
