About Me

After I got out of San Quentin...Just kidding. I'm still in San Quentin.Okay, for real this time. You can see why I gave up my career as a professional stand-up in the UK.I'm an academic, with the UK-equivalent of an Ivy League degree. I do science research. (My comedy stage name was "The Notorious Ph.D.")I do like going to comedy clubs, though, as well as the theatre, movies, slam poetry readings, dance (professional dance performances, that is, like Alvin Ailey or Twyla Tharp).I also like hiking, canoeing, rafting. I've been horseback riding too.And I like travelling: I have been to the United States, England, Scotland, the Emerald Isle (Northern Ireland), South Africa, Swaziland, India, France, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Jamaica, Guyana, Luxembourg, Greece, and our exotic neighbor to the north, Canada.I once ran for US Congress, I've written for magazines like Time, The Source, and Essence, I've been interviewed on Fox News (please don't hold that against me), BBC World News Television, US National Public Radio, etc. I've also been a consultant for a Certain Popular TV Show.I've been a volunteer tutor for schoolkids in Berkeley.

My Interests

For the third time...I like reading, hiking, canoeing, rafting, going to plays, concerts (alternative to hip hop, live jazz), comedy clubs, lectures on politics, writing (non-fiction). I also enjoy science...but I'm not a nerd. (Well, not much of a nerd.) I also like trying new restaurants (I can't wait to go to that new In and Out Burger in Palo Alto.)

I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet someone interested in going to comedy shows, the movies, watching plays, seeing dance performances, going to clubs and parties, discussing Great and Deep Thoughts, politics. If you're European or from Europe, I'd especially like to hear from you. I'm feeling nostalgic.

Music:

I like alternative music: Hole, Everclear, Nirvana, some Pearl Jam, and a lot of groups you've never heard of. I also like No Doubt. I used to like 60's and 80's groups like U2, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Talking Heads. Live jazz I usually enjoy (just saw Regina Carter at Yoshi's in Oakland). I also like some hip hop (Biggie but not Tupac, although I prefer political stuff like Public Enemy or Dead Prez and older stuff like Run-DMC!). Don't want to leave out Peter Tosh, AC DC, Aerosmith, Who, Police, Kansas (old), Peter Gabriel, Genesis (after Peter Gabriel left but before they became superpop).

Movies:

I mostly like science fiction and romantic comedies, as well as documentaries. I liked the Weather Underground documentary, as well as the recent film Good Night and Good Luck. I'm a sucker for Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and I can't wait to see the Narnia movie. Some of the animated films get me, like Toy Story or Finding Nemo and to a lesser extent Shrek.

Television:

I just got hooked on 24, I used to like Deep Space 9, I also occasionally watch the Daily Show. Mostly I watch news: CNN or CSPAN. I was a consultant for a certain Friday night crime drama, but I don't watch it anymore. I must have seen every Monty Python.

Books:

I am illiterit.I don't read many novels actually. I just read Al Franken's new book, The Truth. I got addicted to Harry Potter. When I was in school I remember quite liking John Steinbeck (The Pearl, Of Mice and Men). My favorite book is The Old Man and the Sea, but I also enjoyed The Call of the Wild and White Fang, as well as Catcher in the Rye.I am partial to Nietzsche, although my favorite philosophers are Bertrand Russell and Sartre. I haven't actually understood any of Sartre's philosophy, but I admire Russell and Sartre as people. Frantz Fanon is the thinker whom I have read, and understood, and admire. I love Chomsky. As a kid I read the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis's space trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, etc.), the novels of Larry Niven, and J.R.R. Tolkien.I kind of like Robert Frost, although he degenerates into doggerel too much. I like exactly two poems of Auden. My favorite poem is Tennyson's "Ave atque Vale"; I think my second and third favorites must be John Betjeman's "Christmas" and "Aphrodite" by AE.

Heroes:

Frantz Fanon, WEB Dubois, Che Guevara, Hannibal Barca.
