At the age of 14 years old Scarlet was diagnosed with a severe form of Cancer of the Blood-forming cells, commonly known as Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, and was diagnosed with it again at the age of 18 years old but survived against all odds each time. The excessive and aggressive treatments of the disease and the treatment during the final bone marrow transplant, consequently left her with several other physical problems and conditions which she has learned to live with and manage. Although she was encouraged and advised by other musicians to record her music from her teenage years onwards, dealing with some of these health problems prevented her from doing so, until now.
Scarlet has always had a deep love of the arts, literature and history, wildlife and the natural world…she thrived on the nature surrounding her during much of her childhood. As a child she derived great joy in listening to new music that was played to her, that was simply around her…or that she discovered herself…and she still does to this day. That music has always been of a very wide range. Classical, folk, opera, historical: especially medieval and elizabethan, gypsy, music from many ethnic backgrounds, french, choral, old blues, music from all corners of the world and mainstream music of many genres…pop, indie, rock and many more. Celtic music has an extra special place in her heart, her ancestry is Celtic. It touches on a place within her soul that she cannot explain. Her philosophy is that, if it moves you, then it doesn’t matter what it is or from whom or where.
Around the age of 8 or 9 years old, in a quiet moment alone, she picked up her Father’s old guitar, which was missing two strings, and sat many nights from then on just playing and listening, her head against the body of the guitar, enthralled by the sound resonating within. She then taught herself to play from one of his old chord books, before beginning lessons to learn more a few years later. She loves playing other instruments too, and whilst sometimes laughing at her own thought that she does not excel at them, still delights in the experimentation and discovery. When she’s working on a song she goes about creating layers of sound with vocals and from her collection of eclectic instruments.
Singing, music, art and writing as well as nature have always been essential healing elements in her life. The art element takes many forms, a few of which are: painting and illustration, prints, working with cloth and vintage finds. As a natural dancer she went on to train in dance of different forms including her passion for true Flamenco. Unfortunately, as an outcome of the illness (just as other things in her life were affected also) she could not continue dancing to the extent that she once did...although she cannot help but dance!
She’s always passionately loved reading books of many varied subjects including poetry which she began writing from an early age and considers it to be a natural and needed means of healing release for her. At home she deeply loves planting in the earth, flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruit and trees…sowing seeds and as she calls them “sproutlingsâ€â€¦nurturing them and watching them grow.
