Let's not die.

About Me

Each day I live in a glass room
Unless I break it with the thrusting
Of my senses and pass through
The splintered walls to the great landscape.

The name is Sean Upton, but that shouldn't define the person. I like Jeremy Bentham. The first things you should know about me are that I am a contrarian, I am an atheist and I am an objectivist. Lots of people dis-like me. I find that amusing. I am a University student, but this is one of the most insignificant pieces of information there is in regards to "who I am". I like the word quixotic. I create.

Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the "transcendent" and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.

There's nothing of any importance in life - except how well you do your work. Nothing. Only that. Whatever else you are, will come from that. It's the only measure of human value. All the codes of ethics they'll try to ram down your throat are just so much paper and money put out by swindlers to fleece people of their virtues. The code of competence is the only system of morality that's on a gold standard.

My Interests

As flowers are brilliant but inevitably fall. Who could remain constant in our world? No one could. Today let us transcend the high mountains of transience, and there will be no more shallow dreaminng, no more drunkeness.

Music:

I like all music. Well, I don't like music that was created to make money. I don't really like bands that don't write their own music. Beyond that, if a group is expressing themselves and writing their own stuff, I love. It's all magic to me. Country to punk rock, all of it. Chopin to Rufus Wainwright. I always say Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and curiously enough, Joni Mitchell. I don't listen repeatedly to one type of music unless it can cast a spell. I've mentioned in the past Radiohead, Neil Young and Tom Waits.

Movies:

Films: Cinema Paradiso, Requiem For A Dream, Modern Times, Stand By Me, Leon, Mulholland Drive, Hotel Rwanda, Atomised, Natural Born Killers, The Rules of Attraction, An Inconvienant Truth, Down The Rabbit Hole, The Wizard Of Oz, Garden State, Ben Hur, The Last Kiss, Lord of the Rings, Closer, Rear Window, Die Hard, Annie Hall, Magnolia, Casablanca, Serenity, Stealing Beauty, Brokeback Mountain, Rushmore, Rent, American Beauty, The Notebook, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bombon El Perro, Monster, The Constant Gardener, Dear Wendy, 3 Iron, The Safety of Objects, Alien, Fight Club, Sideways, Thirteen, Crash, Adaptation, Monsiuer Verdoux, 8 and a Half, Once Upon a Time in the West, Grey Owl, Domino, Spirited Away, Almost Famous etc...

Director's: Sergio Leone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Federico Fellini, Oliver Stone, Charles Chaplin, Luc Besson, Guillermo del Toro, Spike Jonez, Rob Reiner, Francis Ford Coppella, David Lynch, Michel Gondry, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Fernando Meirelles, Joss Whedon etc...

Television:

Watching television is like taking a can of black spray paint to your third eye.

Books:

Whenever you committed the evil of refusing to think and to see, of exempting from the absolute of reality some small wish of yours, whenever you chose to say: Let me withdraw from the judgement of reason the cookies I stole, or the existence of God, let me have my one irrational whim and I will be a man of reason about all else - that was the act of subverting your consciousness, the act of corrupting your mind. Your mind then became a fixed jury who takes orders from a secret underworld, whose verdict distorts the evidence to fit an absolute it dares not touch - and a censored reality is the result, a splintered reality where bits you choose to see are floating among the chasms of those you didn't, held together by that embalming fluid of the mind which is an emotion exempted from thought.

Heroes:

It is healthy not to have heroes, but people whom you look up too never the less...

Stephanie Rae Brazier. Christopher Hitchens. Richard Eno. Richard Dawkins. Doc. J.R.R Tolkien. Larry David. Charles Chaplin.

My Blog

A morose end for a man... whos fortune was so fitting... his future started spitting.

I filled the cup up to the brim, and drank it all in one swallow. I tried to taste the poison inside the water. Ah there it is. Bitter is the taste of melancholy and paper. I closed my eyes and felt...
