About Me

Ninja Kitty
Guns or Records?
It's time to pay tribute to one of the most important record labels of the late '70s/'80: SST Records. Bands like Black Flag, Husker Du or Minutemen defined the sound and attitude of an era. But it wasn't just hard core punk that made SST the label it is (or was): By 1986, hard core was dead; D. Boon of the Minutemen died in Dec. 1985 in a car wreck in Phoenix, Az, both Dead Kennedys and Black Flag called it a day in 1986 and noone was there to replace the old guard. Crossover (a mixture of Metal and Punk) was ruling the pit with a scene growing more and more macho and narrow-minded.It's no secret that Flag and large part of the SST HQ were Deadheads (hard core fans of Grateful Dead), so the label sound expanded: with artists like Dinosaur Jr., Soundgarden, Sonic Youth or instrumental groups like Pell Mell, Lawndale or Blind Idiot God even the mainstream press took notice. But the Empire began to crumble.Due to "bullshit business practces", bands like Sonic Youth or Negativland turned against SST.It might be a coincidence that no offical anniversary celebrating of the bands and music took place - maybe SST's glory has completely faded away over bad decisions and change of season.Let us, the fans, celebrate 30 years of excellent music and attitude. Because it was the bands who made it happen!
