A long, long, time ago in a land far away (Summer of 1997 in Kilgore, Texas), four people with similar interests in life and music came together. Disgusted with what was passing for "music" in that time period, Chris Ott, Garrett Schleier, Brian Johnson and Jeff Leppert decided it was time to form a new band and show the world what music was supposed to be. After months of rehersals where blood, sweat, tears, and feeling were poured out, Asbestos finally had its first show in August of 97. Shortly after this first show, they made one addition to the band, Andrew Farrow (ass-kicking guitarist) and started out on their trek to fame. Asbestos then played many shows with other bands like Engine No. 9, Model No. 777 and countless others (which shall go un-named). In the following years, Asbestos gained many fans, much support, and even more enemies (and no, flag burning is not a crime). Asbestos was loved and hated. Finally in the Spring of 1998, the band got together and decided to record an album. This self-produced,self-titled album was the fruit of a year’s labor. And with stolen (although we’ll say "borrowed without permission" for legal matters) recording equipment, the self-titled masterpiece was created. After this, things were going rather well for Asbestos. The album was on sale at local record stores. The band had landed shows, parties and bigger-city venues with much larger bands, that weren’t just East Texas bands. We were quite happy.
And then the proverbial shit hit the fan. One by one, shows got cancelled, one member was permanantly involved in a band in Dallas, Texas, others moved to Shreveport, Michigan, and Austin. Others (like Brian) ran into countless problems with the police. Asbestos drifted apart and were no longer what they had once been, so in Fall of 1998, the band parted ways. Finally, two years later, music was being made once again. Andrew submitted an old Asbestos song to a compilation CD that was coming out, and it got accepted. It was then decided that it was well past time to get back together. Andrew, Chris, and Brian enlisted the help of a drum machine to record another demo, because using live drums in their restricted time frame just wasn’t feasable. That demo, entitled "The Death of Reason" came out in April of 2000. Although this demo was not of the best quality, it laid the groundwork for a powerful and unique metal album. Andrew, Chris, Brian, and Garrett, went back into the studio that Summer to record "The Death of Reason", the full-length album. With this new full length album, Asbestos had three more songs chosen for compliation albums like PANDORA in Louisiana. The songs that were chosen were then digitally re-recorded in 2001 and 2002 and allowed these four musicians to record together once again. Currently the members of Asbestos are scattered all over the place.
NOTICE: Please do not infer any political stance that may be derived from the imagery of Asbestos. The burning flag dates back to 1997 when Clinton was president. Furthermore, Asbestos fully and whole-heartedly supports the brave fighting men and women who defend this fine country here at home and overseas. This notice is here to prevent any radical-types from befriending us for purely political or social reasons. Also, to all people who have ill will towards our government, our military, or our nation....this is not a place in which you are welcome. Asbestos is only about one thing: music. Thank you for your honesty and understanding. Protect freedom, NOT FLAGS.
