For all sailing enthusiasts and seafarers, all those who cannot miss one of the most unique spectacles in the world: the meeting takes place in Trieste, every year, on the second Sunday of October. It’s Barcolana, the international sailing regatta with the largest number of participants in the Mediterranean; an event taking place during a week of entertainment on land and at sea which turns Trieste into the European city of sailing. Two thousand boats at the start, lead by world sailing champions, by sailing race enthusiasts and holiday sailors, who are all under the spell of an exciting event seafarer must take parting, at least once.
The Barcolana take place every year on the second Sunday of October, in the season when Trieste, owing to the Bora wind, shows itself in all its â€prickly graceâ€. Early Autumn oblique sunrays highlight the shape of the 19th century imposing buildings lined up along the waterfront.
The Barcolana is a magical combination of professional competition and sailing festival: professional sailing teams race for the overall victory to break the regatta’s record, family challenge each other or try to beat the club friend or the neighbouring boat. All competitors start at the same time: the first cross the finishing line in less than two hours, the last at sunset. Competitive spirit and passion for sea and sailing lie at the basis of the success of this event. The Barcolana is known all over the world and can attract yachts over 90 feet long and America’s Cup teams to Trieste, the northernmost Gulf of the MediterraneanTrieste: www.trieste.com
