This locus of order is what Lacan designates as the “Real,†that which is predicated on lack, absence and impossibility, the source of choice, good, evil and guilt.57 The connection between the Real and the Symbolic is what maintains the rhetoric of order. The Real is an inaccessible kernel of things, which is always beyond human comprehension, and serves as the source of human motivation through desire and demand. The Symbolic is that which is a physical manifestation of the Real, that which constitutes our subjectivity. The dimension of the “deal†creates the Symbolic out of the Real, until the order is challenged, and the Real is exposed as absent—in short, the Symbolic preserves the Real through a false signification.58 At the center of the Real is Nature—or, more specifically, the phallus.
