Originally from Greenville, MS, Yussef Black also the artist formerly known as Mista RG began writing rhymes and mixing tapes and records back in the late 80s. His mother is a former radio station dj. She use to let him come to the station and listen to airtapes, play with the equipment, and of course dig in the crates! He started recording as Mista RG in the fall of 1995 when he attended Rutgers University in Camden NJ. He met up with Ed and Rob from the then Polygon studios and cut his first demo...."Psykotic Thoughts". With lines like "My bullets do exploratory surgery" and " Straight from Greenville, Our Motto is we kill", he was able to generate a small buzz. It was not until he released a limited independent run of three tracks, "Eveready", "An American Tale(Ch.I)", and "The Way Its Going Down" in 1997 that a more people took notice and had something to say. Armed with a Gold-colored promo, Mista RG proceeded to try and flood college radio, overseas markets, and even shop for a deal. He was met with the resistance of we are looking for more people like "DMX", your stuff is good but it is more laid back spoken word and is not marketable.
So why now almost 11 years later does he come back? Well since then he has experienced more life as well as converted to Islam, which his the name changed to Yussef Black; his grandmother asked him when he played her some new tracks down in San Antonio, TX, "Are you going to actually do something about it this time or just leave it for another 10 years?" So with that in mind, he is back on his J-O-B! Get ready everybody, Yussef Black is hereeeeeeeee!!!
