Im Wendie Mitchell, born and still living in Stoke Newington.
Now with Royden Stock after hanging around with him and the badmanners lot in stokey when I was 14 ...30 years later we are now a couple wow and Im very very happy!!!As a kid I lived on the council estate, played football and learnt how to spin a baton and mace in majorettes was in pack of diamonds and other groups.
Jumped roofs, and ate black jacks...um thats why i like black sambucca now!!!
Bazooka joe played a large part in my jaw trouble especially the long long strips of bazooka joe and loose fillings due to refreshers and drumsticks.
Lucky bags were lucky bags, curley wirley was new, space dust was a must and gold rush coconut tobacco was the one that got me excited to smoke!!!
Went and had fun on buliding sites we called bomb sites...I wasnt round in the war?
Had punch ups, played runouts, knock down ginger made catapults from old bed springs and drank corona...its frothy man!!!! Had a red and white straw ... watch out watch out its a humphrey about.....
Went to saturday morning pictures paid 5p and watched shirley temple....wore basseball boots and slide down the banisters of the flats.
Had a miserable git of a neighbour, watched neighbours punch ups and played with my wendy house and adventure kit.
Had mates with pippa dolls and my sister had tiny tears and sweet april.
Days were fun but looking back we had fuck all, just shows you.
We made dinner with mud and used our heads to imagine situations of our life when we grow up.
I make the dinner you go to work etc...yeah yeah!!
Washing was on washing lines and was never nicked, lables didnt exsist we all loved tescos trainers, my mum bought me green flash and I hid them as I didnt want to be seen flash, now no one wants to be seen in 1.99 tesco trainers.
Hung off the side of icecream vans and asked for broken cornets and nicked the ice cream by pressing the leaver and letting all the cream come out...(wonder why I like cream)
became a skin following ska and working in kensington on weekends and was highly influenced by the punk era and the new wave time, glad I went through it and enjoyed it all.
Spent many years in the Hope and Anchor pub Islington, when madness and exploited where top of the bill.
Grew up stokey and islington and went to school across the road in Hackney.
Seen the rough side of life and the good side, outs and used fairy liquid bottles for water guns.
Even though it was fun later on in life I found out kids were abused and things were happing behind closed doors in the yard we played and at least we had each other for some time of our childhood...good times we shared.
Kids today like my 4 have it all but think they have nothing maybe they are right we had the growth of learning from the yard and the parks the roof and the burnt out cars and my mum taking me from the estate to harrods and sellfridges for clothes but thinking I dont want to go and cried and drove her mad, could I moan but I paid for it later she was dame good at slapping my legs.
Dogs use to run loose and to hear one had bit you was big news, I got bit and a small turkshi girl in allen road had her face scared by a dog.
Cats kept you up all night wailing all over the yard!
Think thats why the boys stayed up late with the catapults.
I remember being able to buy my mum fags at 8 she asked for no.6 and I got her 10 no.10 she wasnt happy.
I liked alvin stardusts black leather and rings...hence I wear loadsa rings silver now!!! do like leather too...hello batman!!!hehehehehehe.
I even had a grandad collar tshirt well trendy then!!! Yes I wore hot pants and wedges in the 70,s but even then I had a gypsey hair cut that now when I look back looks like a skinhead girl cut with long hair and feather cut top, so it was sure in me from the 70,s even though me mother didnt like it I rebelled and 1979 I had my hair shaved, theres a funny story about that me mum went mental and thought all my clothes said I was gay as i wore boots and braces and was going through my bedroom saying if she found mens pants I was sure a lesbian and would be kicked out!!!!!
I grew up with badmanners, also eddie grant, many local bands the pollukkas!
Went on stage with badmanners at the rainbow, dougie always been a mate!
Storys of those days should be in a book and maybe they will be....and more!!
My boyfriend bought me blondie records as he liked blondie and I liked badmanners and gave him badmanners records.
Woolworth use to sell vinyl that was always crap had to take back never played proper.
My dad died when I was 7 I feel I took over the house then my mum was very strong but in the end she became very ill and I gave up work and looked after her with my 4 daughters and then dec 07 she died in my arms and its very hard to understand death unless you been through it. My boyfriend was murderd when I was 18, also a friend of mine was murderd and some took their life and some have died through illness, I have been to more funnerals then weddings!
Having no parents alive, I now feel very alone yet I have wonderful mates but I am just now trying to except the death I knew she was going to die just didnt think I would miss her as much as I do as for years I was heavily caring for her and sometimes I felt so worn out.
I was taken away from all the stress by the bbc sending me off to new zealand march 2007 to may 2007 and had a wonderful experience and miss great barrier island alot I do hope to reurn, there is a part of me there now.
I have been a mum and dad to my daughters and life dont get easy it just gets alot more understandable due to expereince and opening your eyes wider.
have had some sad experiences and some great times I never give up,we never know what tomorrow brings and in a strange way that excites me ......smile for life keeps me going even when days are tough theres always someone worse off...you know that
