About Me

Freedom Art Quartet Formed in New York City, 1991 by Lloyd Haber. The Groups diverse ethnic and compositional structure is a breath of fresh air needed to represent the jazz scene in the new millennium. Our purpose is to explore and create in depth, the limitless dimensions of the art form. F.A.Q. Perform in various clubs, art galleries, and colleges. Festivals include: The Heineken Jazz Festival, The Fire Wall festival, and the UVA Jazz Festival. The Freedom Art Quartet was selected to appear on NYC Disk Makers Best of the unsigned Bands Compilation CD. Their music also appeared in the independent film from New Line Cinema, Happenstance. Throughout the years, many innovative artists have played within the core group; Fred Hopkins, Ravi Coltrane, J.D. Band Members: Abraham Burton- Tenor Sax: Abraham’s professional career as a musician was initiated with the legendary drummer, Arthur Taylor. During his five years with “Taylor’s Wailers” he recorded “Mr. A.T. and “Live at the Village Vanguard”. He has toured throughout the world and performed at notable New York clubs such as: The Village Vanguard, Sweet Basil and Birdland. Abraham has developed a reputation as a veritable professional, recording and performing with the most prestigious of musicians like: Milt Jackson, Roy Hargrove, Louis Hayes, Roy Haynes, Kenny Barron, John Hicks, Arthur Blythe, Jimmy Smith, just to mention a few. Abraham has three CD’s released under his own name on ENJA Records.................Jaribu Shahid- Bass: One of the most influential bassists in today’s jazz scene. In Detroit Jaribu played with Martha Reeves, the Spinners, and Mary Wilson. Moved to Philadelphia to play and record with the Sun Ra Arkestra. Recorded or performed with Milt Jackson, Geri Allen, James Carter, Henry Threadgill, Hugh Ragin, and Hamiett Bluiett. Currently with David Murray, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and a long time member of Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory..................................................... ....................Omar Kabir- Trumpet, Low Brass, Conch, and Didgeridoo: Alumnus of NC School of the Arts, and Manhattan School of Music. Won first place at Show Time at the Apollo. Recorded and/or Performing with David Murray Octet & Big Band, Herbie Mann, Cecil Taylor Big Band, the Jimmy Heath Big Band, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Hugh Ragin, William Cepeda, and Stanley Jorden. Omar was an original cast member of Fame: the musical and Music Director with Cirque du Soleil..........................................Lloyd Haber- Multiple Percussion: A student of the late great Ed Blackwell. Lloyd Has performed with Don Cherry, Bob Stewart, Craig Harris, Louis Hayes, Kalaparusha McIntyre, Charli Persip, Warren Smith, Donald Smith, Howard Johnson and Ron Burton among others. Performances at Symphony Space, John Birks Gillespie and Aaron Davis Hall. Percussion Ensemble clinics at Sam Ash Music and the Long Island Drum Center. Off-Bdwy musical, Songs for the New World. Music for New Line Cinema’s Happenstance.
