LEONARDO CORAL, COMPOSER
Born in Mexico City in 1962, Leonardo Coral studied composition with Federico Ibarra at the National University School of Music in Mexico City, from which he would graduate with honors. Currently he teaches at his Alma Mater and at the “Ollin Yolitzli†Formative School of Music and Dance. His production includes over 90 pieces, distributed between chamber music and symphonic works. Coral has received several grants from FONCA, the Mexican National Fund for Culture and the Arts. In 2001, he became a member of the National System of Creators. Since then he has written three symphonic works: a flute concerto, El jardÃn de las delicias (The Garden of Earthly Delights); his Second Piano Concerto, a concerto for cello and orchestra, and several chamber-music pieces. He was commissioned a piece by the National University, and the result was his Abstracciones (Abstractions), dedicated to the memory of Mexican pianist Miguel GarcÃa Mora; other commissions have been made him by Douglas Bringas, Alejandro Escuer, the Cello Alterno ensemble, the Orchestra of Baja California, the Sinaloa Orchestra of the Arts, the Bellas Artes Wind Trio, the Trio Coghlan, the Schola Cantorum of Mexico, and Miguel Angel Villanueva. Recently, the Schola Cantorum and its director, Alfredo Mendoza, performed the Cuban premiere of Coral’s Tras la ventana (Through the Window), for three children’s choruses and piano, based on texts by Mexican poet José Juan Tablada.
Coral’s chamber music has been recorded on CDs by cellist Ignacio Mariscal and pianist MarÃa Teresa Frenk for Quindecim Recordings, as well as by the “Las Rosas†ensemble, the Mexico City String Quartet and Chandra dúo. Ónix Ensemble recorded a CD entirely devoted to his works entitled Visiones (Visions), also for Quindecim Recordings. Among the eight pieces included in Visiones, Coral’s Concerto for Piano and Chamber Ensemble—performed by pianist Krisztina Deli and conducted by José Areán—is particularly worthy of mention. This piece was given its first performance by the Las Rosas Ensemble, with Gonzalo Gutiérrez at the piano and Sergio Eckstein conducting. For the Urtext label, Coral’s guitar concerto was recorded, with Juan Carlos Laguna as soloist and the Mexico City Chamber Ensemble, under the baton of BenjamÃn Juárez Echenique. Laguna had previously premiered this work with the Sinaloa Orchestra of the Arts with Gordon Campbell conducting, as well as with the Bellas Artes Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Armando Vargas.
