The Pound Ensemble

About Me

The Pound Ensemble was formed in June, 2003 by two American born violists, David Quiggle and Jeffrey C. Johnson living in Spain. What had initially started out as a late night with beer´s inspiration, we decided to play a show by word of mouth in our favorite pub the next night, completely improvised. We had never jammed together although we had played together in hundreds of "classical" concerts from a very early age. We had never set out to play improvised music as our classical training has trained us to be obediant little soldiers and just essentially be i-dotters and t-crossers. We have always had a unique artistry amongst ourselves as individuals. This talent has often infiltrated itself into the real world work place where we both make our professional lives as "classical" viola players. In June, 2003, everything changed as we were classically trained to destroy the tiny pub filled to the gills with over 200 people. (It´s really tiny) We employed the artistic talents of Alejandro Sanz, a renowned percussionist from Albacete to join us for the event. We played for two hours by candlelight and we invented a new and rare breed of music that you will now hear. The group has undergone a few changes due to the fact that Mr. Quiggle is now living in Madrid so we are now playing with pyrotechnical violinist Gabor Szabo from Budapest, Hungary. We hope you are sitting down, taking a moment to get settled and ready for an experience that is as strange and daring as we can muster. One important note to consider is that WE HAVE NEVER PLAYED AMPLIFIED! We are an acoustic ensemble that plays one regular viola, one regular violin and a variety of percussion instruments. We never rehearsed or composed any of this music. It just happens. Thanks for being on this page. Expect to be unprepared!ModMySpace Profile Customizer

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: The members of our little soirée are Jeffrey C. Johnson laying down the phat balls viola, Gabor Szabo providing the pyrotechnical stunt violin playing and Alejandro Sanz is driving the bus with his unique percussive prowess. Previous happenings have used Jose Trigueros as a 2nd percusionist (which was amazing) and David Quiggle on motorcycle viola.
Influences: How does one possibly narrow this down to any reasonably managable size. We have been influenced by homeless people and train wrecks as much as by Bach, The Beatles, John Coltrane, Zakir Hussein, and Slayer. How´s this, you give it a listen and tell us what our influences are.
Sounds Like: We sound like anything but the combination of instruments we play. That´s the honest to God truth.
Record Label: We don´t have one. We also don´t care.
