She is a dreamer, a competitor, an innovator. She is strong, ambitious, and proud.
She is your mother, sister, grandmother, niece, aunt, daughter and, most importantly, your friend. She is your next door neighbor. She lives a million miles away.
She is part of sisterhood that upholds and embodies the most important of values- the value of fierce independence. She is indie.
indiegirl is the inaugural young women’s fashion line designed to launch a broader lifestyle brand called indieEarth.
indiegirl and indieEarth will be
strongly positioned to grow into the most recognizable lifestyle brand that embodies the “indie†spirit that has inspired past generations and will continue to define future generations to come.
Our brand is dedicated to contributing 10% of annual net profits to organizations that are working to make the world a safer place for the female community. Some of these organizations include: One in Three Women and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Human Rights Watch , and Women for Women International.
The key and locket brand identity for our line will drive home our message that a true indiegirl wields an indomitable spirit that is the key for opening the hearts and minds of everyone she encounters- starting with her
expression of solidarity for the charities the indiegirl brand supports by wearing our clothing.
Our indiegirls
indiegirl’s objective is to break the mold of a traditional apparel company and to redefine what it is to become a fashion driven, socially responsible brand, all the while creating awareness around gender-based violence. Our indiegirl clothing line will be the first in a line of “indie†branded products which will rapidly expand to include accessory lines, jewelry, makeup and handbag products- to name just a few.
indiegirl will be promoting an overall brand image of “independence against conformity,†and our brand is primarily inspired by the energy of youth culture. We reinforce our brand image through the sponsorship of
influential artists, targeted grassroots marketing events, and distinctive advertising.
Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.
WHAT IS GENDER BASED VIOLENCE?
In 1993, the UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women offered the first official definition of gender-based violence:
Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivations of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.
The definition encompasses, but is not limited to, acts of physical, sexual, and psychological violence in the family, community, or perpetrated or condoned by the State, wherever it occurs. These acts include: spousal battery; sexual abuse, including of female children; dowry-related violence; rape, including marital rape; female genital mutilation/cutting and other traditional practices harmful to women; non-spousal violence; sexual violence related to exploitation; sexual harassment and intimidation at work, in school and elsewhere; trafficking in women; and forced prostitution.
The World Health Organization report that “one of the most
common forms of violence against women is that performed by a husband or male partner.†This type of violence is frequently invisible since it happens behind closed doors, and effectively, when legal systems and cultural norms do not treat as a crime, but rather as a “private†family matter, or a normal part of life.
Some groups of women are particularly vulnerable to violence, such as: women belonging to minority groups, indigenous women, refugee women, migrant women, women living in rural or remote communities, destitute women, women in institutions or in detention, female children, women with disabilities, elderly women and women in situations of armed conflict.
Violence against women and girls is a global epidemic that
affects the health and economic stability of women, their
families, and their communities.
At an individual level, gender-based violence and coercion is a gross violation of human rights. Moreover, a society that tolerates violence against women— where women are denied basic human rights and protection under the law, and where perpetrators of violence go unpunished — is not a just, stable society.

“I firmly believe that the central moral challenge of this century, equivalent to the struggles against slavery in the 19th century or against totalitarianism in the 20th, will be to address sex inequality in the third world . . .†- Nicholas D. Kristof , New York Times
