In a race to fulfill a dream Joy Dion has faced many obstacles and is still breaking down barriers. From recording in the basements of Detroit all the way to the Hit Factory of New York she is still striving to find her place in the business.Born on the southwest side of Detroit, Michigan Joy Dion, like many other artist/musicians, acquired a talent for singing in church. Joy joined the youth choir at the age of four and performed her first solo at seven.“It was at that moment I realized what I wanted to do with my life,” stated a confident Joy Dion. Working to help realize Joy’s dream, her brother became instrumental in finding avenues to help develop her talent. Throughout Joy’s youth, she appeared in commercials and musicals in the southern Michigan area. Eventually, she joined a five-member female R&B group known as Deepa Flava, which allowed her to start developing her recording and performing skills. Over a 5-year period, the group performed for various talent shows, nightclubs, and cabarets across the Detroit Metropolitan area. Over the years, the group dwindled in size and eventually the remaining members were college bound, making it difficult to pursue dreams of stardom together.Motown has left the buildingWith only the few remains of a historic museum and an abandoned office building to represent Motown’s existence in Detroit, Joy Dion knew that going to college in Michigan was not an option. She wanted to be closer to New York and therefore she accepted a full academic scholarship to Howard University in Washington DC. Shortly after her arrival to the District, Joy began networking with people who soon provided the opportunity for travel back and forth to New York for the purpose of recording a demo. Trips to the Big Apple became so frequent, it left hardly anytime for studying however, Joy maintained a GPA high enough to keep her scholarship. For Joy, this meant free room and board and more opportunities to record. During the summer months Joy accepted an Internship with Jaguar Automotive Headquarters which at the time was located in Mahwah NJ. After long hours in the office, Joy drove to Manhattan in the evenings to sit-in other artist recording sessions in hopes of their session ending early enough for her to record some material and still make it to work the next morning. Her time spent on the east coast allowed her to work with producers such as Red Spyda, Corey Rooney, Al West , JD Steel , Static), and many more. After years of the same routine Joy has seen recording deals come and go. “Being signed doesn’t mean anything; I’ve been signed to a major recording label (BlackGround/Universal) and now I am looking for a new deal but you must have the right support behind you because if not, your just wasting your time and someone else’s money.”Today Joy Dion resides in Washington D.C. and at the age of 24 her soulful and sultry sound can occasionally be heard on local radio stations. There's definitely an ol' school and autobiographical vibe throughout the compellation of songs that she so modestly attest to be a demo. With musical influences such as Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, and Al Green it is no wonder comparisons of her music are being made to artist such as R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, and Mary J Blige.
