When Dave Eller invites you underneath the covers on the opening track of his debut album, Diary of an Urban Hippie, don’t be afraid to take the plunge.
There’s dichotomy to Dave Eller’s life having worked in the corporate world and entertainment scene simultaneously, he has struggled to find the balance that we all search for at times hence the album’s title.
Growing up and spending many years in Sydney, he now calls the Gold Coast home. Dave has changed schools and jobs more times than he can remember. After writing lyrics for over 15 years he finally got round to picking up a guitar and discovered a way to give his innermost thoughts and experiences wings.
The songs on the album are uncomplicated, yet sophisticated and deeply revealing.
‘Diary of an Urban Hippie’ is the soundtrack of one man’s life. There are hints of Pete Murray, Chris Isaac and even Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and like the world under the covers there are plenty of shadowy places. But as the music peels back the layers, a pearly brightness pours in to reveal an album that’s fresh, loose and fun, and jam-packed with infectious rhythms and unforgettable hooks. Every song on this album has a heartbeat.
There are no abstract references here, things are laid out plain and simple. Like the album’s title, it’s quite obvious where Dave Eller is coming from, and where he’s going to. He is a free spirit at heart, a man who’s inner self has finally gassed up the Kombi, thrown the guitar in the back and invited us all on a roadtrip along the byways and backroads of our own hearts, minds and imaginations.‘So forget about the stress of the day
We’re goin’ for a ride gonna take you away…
Underneath the covers we can be lovers
Underneath the covers we can be friends’The good news is that there’s room for everyone, so just pile on in and enjoy the ride.
