BOTTLE ROCKET

Joseph moved to Glasgow in 2006 from New York to get a Master's degree in film at the University of Glasgow - but really he was just looking for kicks and a cozy indie scene on the other side of the ocean. Battling shyness, he looked for an acceptable way to befriend classmate Chris, and one day he overheard Chris talking to Susan about some bands that he loved, and finally got up the courage to join in on the conversation. They became friends and over time taught each other about the subtle and not so subtle cultural differences between them. There was much gig-going, and eventually many boozy fun nights in dark and sweaty indie clubs. There was also a lot of studying involved, though Chris was more apt to succeed at uni, and after graduation in 2007, he took up PhD studies. Joseph worked a series of soul-crushing temp jobs before moving to London in June 2008.Some of their friends did a club night called Meow Mix at Nice N Sleazy, but decided to move on, leaving a desirable slot - the 3rd Saturday of the month - open to a new club. Joseph was working the door at the Kaput club and was itching to get back to DJing, something he did for a while in New York. He got introduced to the nice people at Nice N Sleazy, and recruited Chris to join him for their new adventure. They were given a one-off trial night on 30 May, which was the same night as NPL, one of their favourite club nights. With Chris on holiday in Tokyo, and nearly all of Glasgow indiedom at NPL, Joseph played music for 3 1/2 hours, delighting some and angering others. Somehow the right people thought it was a good night, and gave life to Bottle Rocket.And that was the beginning.Now Bottle Rocket is enjoying life as club for people who feel awkward at typical clubs; playing music that you'd usually only dance to on your bed when you're home alone. BR is about love and fun, with passionate, smart, caring DJs. It's about dancing badly, singing along, and feeling great.December 20th will be Joseph's last Bottle Rocket, as he moves back to New York in hopes of giving bashful sweethearts a club to cozy up to. Bottle Rocket Glasgow will continue, as usual, on the 3rd Saturday of the month at Nice N Sleazy.We also have a facebook group, it's called "Bottle Rocket Dancing Club", which, let's face it, is kind of where its at these days.
