STATEMENT OF NEED
Skateboarding has become one of the favorite sports across the country providing recreation, exercise and a safe place for kids to hang out while learning the sport. Keeping kids off the streets and participating in positive activities is an investment in our community’s future.
Kids nationally have had a hard go at trying to find places that they can improve their skills at skate boarding and even skating. Many have been brushed away from the mainstream communities that did not have a adequate place for kids to skateboard or skate resulting in kids using what ever they could find to improve their skills including public spaces and equipment such as benches, stair rails, steps, curbs, and so on leading to many communities and city’s outlawing skateboarding and skating in public areas.
Skateboarding has become a sport thanks to many community action groups, neighborhood associations, even skate boarding associations, and now the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club has heard the call and is trying to provide a much needed area for skateboarders and skaters, funding is the challenge now, but we believe the Summer Smash event will raise the much needed funds to build an adequate skate park.
SKATEBOARD PARK CONCEPT
The philosophy of the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club is to foster an environment that will nurture the future (our children), we accomplish this through making the children the foundation of every decision, asking the question “does this decision have a positive outcome for the children?â€
The Tulalip Boys and Girls Club truly believe that to have a brighter future we must recognize that children are our future and always will be, and to change children’s lives in a positive way will result in a positive future, a better future, and a brighter future. This in it’s self encompasses the mission of the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club.
SKATEBOARD PARK PROGRAM
The surrounding skate park area is highly active with youth from the Tulalip Elementary School across the street, and the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club on the same lot. Approximately 200 to 300 youth/teens attend the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club Monday through Thursday 2:30pm to 9:00pm, Fridays 2:30pm to 6:00pm and 8:00pm to 1:00am, and Saturday 8:00pm to 1:00am for teen night. This diversity keeps the environment interesting and vibrant; without it, the space will feel "overrun" and homogenous...a place for "skaters only."
