About Me

Want to get information--
* Without flashy headlines? * Without partisan politics?
* Without lobbying by vested interests? * Without sound bites?
We do that . . . and you can help! Visit the League of Women Voters of Lawrence/Douglas County (LWV-L/DC) at our new location, and check out our Journal-World Marketplace profile and calendar .
The LWV-L/DC is a grassroots, all-volunteer, non-profit organization that has educated citizens and lobbied government in the public interest for more than 75 years. We study topical government problems and come to positions based on member consensus. Then we act.
In recent years, the LWV of Lawrence/Douglas County:
Without flashy headlines . . .
Sponsored public meetings about campaign finance reform in Kansas, what our city and county sales tax has bought, the rocky road to welfare reform, the effects of tax abatements in Douglas County, and how public transportation works in another university town.
Without partisan politics . . .
Testified before and wrote to the city, county, and planning commissions based on League study of planning issues, recreation policy, public transit, and development in the unincorporated areas of the county; and to state and national legislators on a host of issues.
Without lobbying by vested interests . . .
Presented candidate forums; registered voters at groceries, schools, downtown, Haskell, the Health Department, and the Lawrence Public Library; and worked to Get Out The Vote, all in cooperation with NAACP, Youth in Government at LHS, and the AAUW. We also studied such League program items as tax abatements in Douglas County, the State School Board and educational governance in Kansas, controlling suburban sprawl in the county and the representativeness of the Planning Commission.
Without sound bites . . .
Observed meetings of the city and county commissions, the planning commission, and the school board, and began work on a Citizen Handbook on Douglas County Government .
