The Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra

About Me

The Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra formed in 2008; a 15-member ensemble featuring 13 saxophones ranging from bass to soprano and 2 drummers. The orchestra is currently rehearsing Miller's first symphony with an anticipated 2009 NYC premiere. This composition uses Miller's unique all-interval method. MP3s posted on this site are rehearsal tapes and live performances.

Composers of influence are Oliver Messiaen, Arnold Shoenberg, Glenn Branca, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy - to name a few. The orchestra is now lining up some exiting shows for the fall as well as an all-analog recording in September.

Miller’s performance and recording credits include Sproton Layer (1969-71), a psych-rock band with brothers Roger (Mission of Burma, The Alloy Orchestra) and Laurence (Destroy All Monsters); The Fourth World Quartet (1974-75) with hyperpianist Denman Maroney in ‘75, Destroy All Monsters (1977-78) that included Ron Asheton (Iggy Pop and the Stooges) and Michael Davis (MC5); Dirty Old Man River (1997-2000), Ben Miller/degeneration (2000-present), Third Border (2003-present), and The Push-Pull Quartet (2007-08).

"Every Room", a composition for 16 saxophones, was released by Abaton Book Company as a 45 rpm in 2007. Miller recorded this himself via overdubbing in his home studio in 2006 before he considered forming a full orchestra. Don Voisine did the cover and sleeve artwork.
…reminiscent of The Microscopic Sextet. An interesting piece of work with chamber proclivities and many happy associations.

On Branca

the first time I heard Glenn Branca was on a cassette tape in 1982. I appreciated it, but it did not move me. In 1992, I was driving home at 3am listening to WCBN and heard music that literally sounde...

First live performance 2009

Last nights performance at the Douglass Street Music Collective in Brooklyn, NY was a success. Glass White (written for Branca's 2007 Lost Chord Contest) started the set, followed by the majority of o...

Order

Order is everywhere. There is reason and purpose in everything that occurs. This is the same for Music; Sound organized by human beings or otherwise.

Pantonality

Pantonality is the sound of Mystery. I could attempt to explain that statement, but I won't.  Cecil Taylor once replied when asked how to play a C Major Seventh chord; "C, E, G, B and all the not...
