About Me

Here is how most conversations between myself and visitors to this page go. I have given the casual visitor speech marks, whereas I have none.:Welcome to the section of the internet most commonly known as 'Audio Porn.'"That sounds amazing, Tell me more!"I am an almost award winning Radio DJ and I can be heard on GU2, which is the student radio station for Surrey Uni. In term time I regularly present two shows: Something For The Weekend (friday 4-7pm as part of a team) and Andy Vale's Perfumed Garden Gnome Show (friday 7-9pm on my lonesome). SFTW has more chat and giggles and my solo slot focusses a lot more on music. During the holidays my show gets an extra hour and runs from 7-10pm. I often guest on other shows and do some live outside broadcasts, see my show schedule above for them. All of this can be listened to at www.gu2.co.uk"That's fascinating! You sound like a busy bee. The first thing I noticed when I got here were your biceps! Firm and tough yet comforting, you are a stallion. The second thing I noticed was that your profile says you are a band, how can this be so?"I'm not a band, sorry. But they had no option for Radio DJ and this one seemed most fitting. To compensate, if you listen to my shows I play lots of bands, how's that for a deal eh? Some you will know, some you won't and some that you won't hear in too many other places. Stop looking at my arms. I don't focus too much on any genres but as a guideline I play music from roughly 12 different genres per show, not that I particularly count though. I also give a lot of time to local and/or unsigned acts, many have come in for interviews or live sessions and I think some of them even enjoyed it."So you clearly have the heart of Mother Teresa as well as The Terminators body! So technically you are better than a band?"I don't know about that, but thank you anyway."Well you're certainly better looking than most bands. You say you are on a student radio station, call me crazy but it's hardly 'The Big League' is it?"Everyone starts somewhere. Besides I love the station I am on. I have a lot of freedom with regards to who, what and why I play what I do. The people are cracking and I sit by a window where someone once flashed me. But if you want my services on your radio station then send me a message and we can talk. Alternatively if you want your station to hire me then send them an email directing them my way."If I had a radio station I'd hire you on the spot. You talk to me of music, I myself dabble in the musical arts and I'd always wondered if I'd be good enough for radio. Is this something that may interest you?" I love finding and playing music, if you think you may have an iota of talent or originality then feel free to send a CD along to: GU2 Radio Andy Vale Union House Surrey University Guildford Surrey GU2 7XH "But I'm sure you get loads"I do"Then would you really have the time to listen to little old me?"Here's the fun bit, it's almost certain that whatever you send I will listen to (or at least part of, forgive me if I don't sit through your 7 CD ambient prog-trance xylaphone epic concept album.) "You generous man! You feel the pain of us starving artists@ I send out my demos and stuff all the time, I know the hassle you have to go to so I do my best to at least give it a listen. If I like it, I'll play it. Simple."Enough about what you do (I'm getting flustered.) How did you get to such a point?"Years ago I decided to get into radio at Uni. One morning in late August 2007 I got my A-Level results at 10am confirming my place at Surrey Uni. By 11am I had contacted all the main players at GU2, telling them that I was coming. "You do work fast. I bet you can go slow too..." Erm, sure babe why not. Anyway, once I got there I had a relatively short guest slot on Something For The Weekend during Freshers week, they decided they liked me and I've been doing it ever since. About a month later I had been handed my own solo slot, which rapidly got boosted from one hour to two. I got involved with the local music scene when a soon to be friend (and shit hot acoustic guitarist) called Byron Johnston asked someone at the station to come down and do some interviews at a night he ran called Strangers On A Train. Since then I have done about 80 interviews with both local and international artists such as We Are Scientists, John Dolmayan (S.O.A.D and Scars On Broadway), The Twang, Venga Boys, Alter Bridge, Laura Critchley, Glasvegas, Opshop, The Drifters with more to come."...would you like me to pick those names up for you?" Knob. As a result of my frequent involvement in the local music scene I won the award of Biggest Contribution From A Non-Committee Member at GU2's AGM and was later elected as Press Officer as well. Then in November, after a whole summer making entries I was awarded third place in the Best Newcomer category in the UK Student Radio Awards in London."Only third?"That's a sore nerve. Don't scratch it. Besides there were 5 people nominated, about 40 people who entered the category, a couple of thousand people are in UK Student Radio and there are hundreds of thousands of Freshers at UK universities every year. So technically I was third out of hundreds of thousands! "Or five"Whatever. Besides, I do it for the love of presenting, discorvering music and bringing it to a wider audience "Then why did you beg for a job earlier? Anyway, I'm listening to your Best Newcomer entry for the Student Radio Awards and someone is booing you!"That is actually Mr Elliot Friel, a fellow DJ and a good friend. It was a good natured matey boo. "Sure. Either way, I've listened to your bronze winning entry now, was it a bad year for student radio?" No! It was one of the best on record. It has once again proved itself as a fertile breeding ground for the nations future in radio and entertainment. I feel privildged to be a part of it. "That's great. So those quotes at the side, are they real or did you write them yourself? Oh and you spelt priviledged wrong."All real. My bad. "Am I done here yet?"You could read the blogs. They contain news, setlists, articles, information on gigs, compe/ "/I'm done. Bye" See you soon!"No you won't. Oh and I lied about your biceps." I guessed.---------------------------------------------------- ------- I hope that was informative.

Sounds Like: Being slapped with a golden flannel. "Either got it or you haven't Andy Vale, one of our new talent offerings, epitomises the headline phrase. Most of us when we started out sounded dreadful and suffered from that horrible disease of trying to hard. False voices, feigned enthusiasm and a surfeit of ridiculous DJ’isms were all present when we started. Somehow Andy on the other hand sounds natural by default, like he just kind of gets it. We instantly warm to his very clear likeability and so he very much deserves appearance in our newsletter." Radiotalent.co.uk newsletter July 3rd 2008. To go to that page (which isn't as good as this one to be honest as its more for industry stuff, go to www.radiotalent.co.uk/andyvale)Here are some recent comments about my shows and demos."Relaxed and flows well, clearly in control and is confident with his show. Presenting is passionate and knowledgeable. He is in touch with the local music scene and this is represented well in the show and makes it relevant to the local audience. Interesting and good value features including ‘5 minute song’ and ‘a track from a cd I nicked off my dad’. Overall, a passionate presenter with a good show concept, and enjoyable listen."Sam Potts, Columbia Records"Andy has a very dry sense of humour which is quite unique and therefore gives his show a real distinct quality. There were moments of real comedy as Andy delivered some very nice one liners! In a radio world with sound-a-like jocks, Andy stands out from the crowd."Nik Goodman, Media Consultant "Andy has an infectious enthusiasm for broadcasting and music. I was particularly struck by his original and quirky selling of the music. He not only has original ideas but executes them effectively. All too often radio presenters labor the point, Andy seems to let his ideas speak for themselves. His contributions to GU2 have been excellent even during holiday periods. His passion for live music is also noteworthy, I'm hoping to hear the Broccoli song in the charts soon!" Chris Suckling, GCap Media "Nice voice, confident and natural. Laid back style really nice. You seem to be very passionate and committed to student radio, your off-air efforts are clear from your written submission. Your natural voice which makes you stand out."Helen Grimes, formerly of Wise Buddah, Sony and 5Live. There are more, but to be honest I doubt you want to hear my mothers opinion.
