I try to be successful, just like you!
But what does that mean?
One thing I know for certain is that I do not want to fall into the mold of typicality. I do not necessarily want the American Dream as you know it. I characterize the American Dream as that being the white picket fencing encompassing an early colonial style home with a Chrysler Sebring parked next to the wife’s Toyota Four-Runner that she uses not so much as a vehicle designed for off-roading, rather, a charter wagon to transfer the three kids to and from soccer practice and ballet. The only exception to the preceding statement would be if that lifestyle truly was the key to success.
We can all justifiably equate success in terms of financial means, in which case the aforementioned objects of desire would most assuredly represent that feeling of “I made itâ€. Unfortunately and inevitably, a person trapped in that sort of life will always want to be chasing the next best thing. He will get sick of his Chrysler, as will his wife and her Four-Runner. They will move to a bigger house because their kids are getting too big for their Colonial. Instead of soccer and ballet, the path for his children would be another expensive activity that requires him to devote his entire Saturday afternoon at the supposed expense of his children’s enjoyment. He will, in the process, lose touch entirely with his notions of self actualization and furthermore, his innervision will become tainted and unrecognizable.
I speak only on behalf of those who trick themselves into believing that this lifestyle is meant for them. There are oodles of people who want and expect nothing more out of their lives then to live in a Colonial and take their kids to soccer. These people have granted credence to this type of existence (the American Dream), whether truly and genuinely from their hearts or not; that is, if they know that as their “destiny†and if they actually pursue gratification in that manor. Even if sources for chasing that lifestyle are unbeknownst to any such person, if they have tricked themselves into believing that as “the wayâ€, they will be fully justified in their course of actions. I have chosen to take the high road in regards to the never ending strive for success in our world. Here is what I deem a success story: waking up in the morning.
Every day that I continue to be alive, I continue to learn. I receive second chances, certain glances, happy stories, bitter anecdotes, stupid people, intuitive children, lessons of logic, conversations that won’t stop, and many other attributes of coexistence. ALL OF WHICH HELP ME BEYOND COMPREHENSION. When you close any door in your mind, even if it pleads to be shut, locked, and undisturbed, you are limiting yourself and thus preventing any slight chance their may be of a lesson to be learned. That is why it is always important to keep at least one or two unintelligent people in your life; if only to be used as a sort of caution and warning of what not to become. Once you begin to learn concepts of our reality, I believe it is our obligation to share our insights with ignorant people.
Remember a time in your life when a person said something so meaningful that it has since stuck in your thoughts and in an obscure way, helped you or steered you away from any given occurrence. If that person would have kept his statement to himself, we (as ignorant people) would be unprepared for the future because we would possess a lack of knowledge pertaining to any certain instance. That is a scary scenario to try and fathom. Imagine being completely unprepared for, let’s say, impending misfortune (perhaps death); simply because you could not take thirty seconds to chat with the guy you thought looked uninviting. The truth is this: WE ALL HAVE VERY POSITIVE THINGS TO OFFER THIS WORLD. We are living in the proverbial all-you-can-eat buffet of potential knowledge, yet few of us carry around big enough plates to get our money’s worth.
